Nurse Educators, Introduce Yourselves!

Welcome to the Nurse Educator Forum. It is my desire that you find this a warm, inviting place and will come here often for friendly, collegial discussions.

Let me introduce myself: I have been an ADN nurse educator in a small community college in North Carolina for the past two years. My areas of specialty are medical-surgical, OBGYN and immediate newborn, and cardiac nursing. In addition to teaching, I conduct clinicals on general medical-surgical, PEDS, postpartum, and cardiac step-down units. Along with being a full time nursing instructor, I am working on my Masters in Nursing Education. I am enrolled in a fully online curricula and have been very satisfied with this so far.

I have learned much these past two years but, I have so much more to learn! I look forward to hearing from you.

I am a recent college graduate with a BSN, and am eager to begin grad school this fall while working as an RN full-time. I am currently looking at MSN and MAEd programs. I have discovered that I have a passion to teach. I want to serve student, and indirectly serve society. I am fascinated to know that I can learn alongside students, I also would really enjoy the school's schedule oppose to the hospital's. I would really appreciate any advice, or suggestions. Thanks.

To all the Nurse Educators:

Are you full-time professor/lecturer? Or, do you still work as an RN?

Will I be able to teach at a University with an MSN and Educator Certificate?

What is your schedule like?

Will I be at a disadvantage having MAEd and wanting to teach Nursing?

Thanks for your time!

Hello all,

I am a nurse educator in an urban community collage. I have been in education for several years. My main focus is med/surg.

HI, My names is April and I am currently finishing up my masters degree in nursing education. I am wondering what the average pay is for nurse educators. Is it comparable to floor nursing.

Hi April,

Welcome! I'm not sure where you're located, but I'm just outside Boston. I have 26 years of nursing experience, and also do "floor nursing" in addition to teaching. As faculty, I make about 45.00 per hour- to do lecture, clinical and advisement. (I lecture to 40 students, advise and have clinical for 8.)

I make over 60.00 to work on the floor with my 3 bone marrow transplant patients. So- teaching doesn't pay like working in town- my hospital that I work is in Boston. But, I find teaching incredibly rewarding, and I think the pay is going to have to go up as we desperately need more nursing faculty. Hoping to have you join the ranks!

May I ask where you are working on the PhD in Clinical Heath Sciences. I am currently looking for a doctoral program (online) in education. However, I would prefer a program in a health related field. Thanks

((MilesRN)) May I ask where you are in Ohio? My husband is from the Dayton/Cincinnati area and we are going there next month for a memorial service for his mom. Where in Ohio do you teach? I am an associate grad who went back and got BSN, MSN and teach adult med-surg nursing at a private Catholic ASN school just outside Boston. My office partner teaches the first course, Fundamentals- and my hat is off to you! Patience patience patience required! :bowingpurThis is a good blog, hope you find it helpful!

I am a nurse educator in Texas. I teach in an LVN program. I love it. In fact it is the LVN program I attended 20 years ago...

Is there any room on this forum for us "workplace nurse educators"?I manage eLearning & Clinical Development (including PBDS) for a large healthcare system.

We certainly share a lot of challenges with the academic world but we have some unique areas of concern - such as acculturation and competency development of foreign nurses; compliance with EEOC/Employment law; shrinking availability of learners due to tighter labor budgets; etc, etc.

Hello everyone, I am relatively new to the site. I just completed my MSN and have applied for my first nurse educator job at the ADN level. I am so nervous about the interview questions that will be asked. I have been a clinical instructor for the last two years for a ADN program. What kind of questions will I be asked during the interview? Help!!

First, congratulations and welcome to nursing education. I've been an ADN lecturer and clinical faculty for almost 7 years, and I love it!

Relax, you have nursing experience and you've been a clinical instructor- which is how I started too. (Don't mean to give you artificial confidence, but there is a huge nsg faculty shortage, and they are probably so grateful to have someone with your experience. They know you- you have a track record and they wouldn't be interested in hiring you for theory if they didn't know your qualifications.):nurse:

That being said, you might want to bring some samples of your writing, or inservices or lectures you've written and given. They will also want o know your teaching style, how you deal with difficult or challenging students, conflict resolution- stuff like that.

I remember being asked about my perspective towards nursing education- they want to know that you will be supportive of your students, yet expect them to hold the same high standards for care that the institution does. Do some research on your school- what is their philosophy? I teach at a small previously girls Catholic school- so Christian principles are inherent in our curriculum- though we take faculty and students not Christian. Look them up on the web and see what the school advertises as it's "selling points". Our school is small, so we provide an "intimate learning experience with small classes."

These are just a few suggestions that come to mind quickly- I hope other faculty will chime in with suggestions.

((((Welcome and good luck, you'll be fine! )))))):twocents::redbeathe
