Nurse Corps Scholarship 2018-2019

Published

Hi Everyone, I'm planning to apply for the HRSA NurseCorp Scholarship this year. I figured I would go ahead and start the next thread for this award year. I'm currently finishing up some of my prereqs and will be starting my BSN program in June. I know the application date hasn't been released yet but from what I have seen on other threads, it should be opened sometime in March/April with a deadline in May. I've also read that the prompt questions have been the same from one award year to the next so I have begun working on them as well as trying to figure out who I would like to use as recommendations. I would love to hear from all who plan to apply this year.

So, any suggestions on loans? What servicer have you used? Advantages, disadvantages?

I will actually be talking to the financial advisor at my school next week. I currently only have the federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans and some grant money, which covers my tuition and books but don't offer me much in the way of helping with my living expenses, hence why I will be calling next week to see what else is available to me and what I am eligible for. Hopefully someone else who has taken out private loans will chime in with helpful suggestions.

Hopefully. I have seen that Wells Fargo and Discover have loans for healhcare.

For loans, Sallie Mae isn't a bad idea. The application process is pretty easy and they can approve you up to the cost of attendance for your program. They disperse the money straight to your school, but you may get a little left over back, depending. The only downside is the interest rates tend to be a little high compared to federal loans, and you may need a cosigner. But you can just go to their website and complete an application fairly quickly to get the process started.

I'm more than ready for the application to open up. Last year, I had everything uploaded, but I was waiting on one last letter. I got it, but the deadline was 7pm their time, not my time. I went to upload the last bits but the application was closed. I was so crushed and embarrassed by that silly error.

Anyway, that just means that i have my essays ready, all my contacts lined up, and all copies of official documents at hand. I've been looking for places to work that qualifyfor the 2 years that we owe just to get an idea of where i can work.

Don't make my silly mistake. Turn it on ahead of time!! Also, start researching places to work now. I've heard it's hard to find a suitable workplace in a lot of attractive areas. Good luck to everyone.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know someone in a DNP program who has received HRSA loan forgiveness or scholarship for the DNP? I have some questions and would love to connect with someone who has actually done it.

OyNursing,

I am interested in hearing from anyone that has received the HRSA nurse corps scholarship with a stipend for the DNP program as well. I plan on applying this year.

Hi! I applied to the nurse corps scholarship this year and am so upset that I did not put my applicant ID on all the supporting pages...Did anyone make the same error last year and still receive the scholarship? TIA!

I don’t think it mattered! There was some confusion last year and I know that some people contacted HRSA got different answers but I don’t think I put my app ID on everything and I’m a participant.

Can anyone from last year give any insight on how hopeful one should be if they are made a finalist and do the enrollment verification and acceptance to continue? Is it still a long shot after that stage? I know funding is limited so I don't want to be too excited. But a little hopeful would be nice. I saw that a lot of you dealt with them going back and forth and changing statuses due to lack of funding. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m pretty sure everyone that got the finalist emailed was awarded the scholarship. I think there were a few hiccups where some people got the finalist email and then were denied but I think HRSA made a mistake and corrected it. I would read this thread, a few pages back and see.

Hi. I applied, was a finalist very early on, signed the contract, and even was assigned a case manager, but I did not, ultimately get the scholarship. Yes some folks very late in the game were notified & awarded (before those who were made finalists early on) and we were told there were glitches they were trying to fix. I was not fortunate enough to have a "remedy" due to the glitch. Good luck to you. If you are not chosen, they won't give you a reason why...they'll just give you a canned response about receiving X number of applications, and there are only Y number of spots (those Y spots always seem to be in the low 200's). I did not reapply this year for two reasons: I did not want to go through the agony of being a finalist only to not receive the scholarship again, and now I only have just over a year left in my program (accelerated 2 yr RN/ BSN) & I did not want to commit to 2 years for them only providing to me, one year of funding. Again, best of luck to you.

Man, I hate that. Don't get people's hopes up for a life altering thing. Just say yes or no. Signing you up with a case manager and all, that's not cool. I'm sorry. The way luck has historically gone in my life I am not going to hold my breath, I think I won't be safe to be even a little excited until I am noted as full recipient since it seems every step before that they can go back on. I really really hope the sands shift if my favor this time because I'm already going to be out 62k for the first 12 months...of 3.5-4 years. If not I will have to get serious about weight loss and try military which is still competitive. Thanks for the reply. At least you're almost done. Hopefully the loan repayments will come through where the scholarship left that gap. And for the love of God I hope they don't have those crazy glitches this year.
