Nurse Corps Scholarship 2017-2018

Published

Hi everyone,

I am interested in applying to the nurse corps scholarship 2017 2018 in order to pay for my accelerated program of sixteen months. I have a bachelors in sociology. I have done quiet a few researches. The application cycle will be open this month but I don't know which exact date. I have read discussion threads of previous years and have found really helpful information. I want to create a platform where interested applicants can ask questions, share information, discuss and help each other.

Thanks

I too am waiting. Getting worried to why it is not open yet.

Hey.. do you think I can see (as an example) how you responded to the essay questions?

Congrats on your scholarship!! do you think I can see (as an example) how you responded to the essay questions?

Can you tell me what your EFC was when you applied? mine is 000547, and I very worried about that plus my measly 3.0 GPA from my pre-requisite courses.

My EFC was 000000. My undergraduate major was 3.47 (I did two years at a community college and then two years at a university). Then, when I went back and took my prerequisites at another community college, I had a 3.95 gpa (stats, both A&P's and Micro). Honestly, i think volunteering experience and working with underserved communities is the most important part of the application.

I think that EFC is very competitive. Mine is is more in the 10k range and I've still decided to apply. I wouldn't worry too much about your GPA. The essays and your EFC are your biggest tools to impress the reviewers so channel your energy there

I'm so depressed. I missed the deadline because I miscalculated the time. Hopefully this just means that my efc will be lower, and I can have a whole year to perfect the essays for the next round :'(

@pebblebeach, BSN @FutureNurseEmilyP198 Can you give any insight into what withholding on taxes winds up being in comparison to the entire award? I know all of it is taxable and so I understand how much to withhold on the monthly stipend but what was your experience with the tuition part of it? I just am concerned that after accepting the award the taxes on it might be astronomical. Any thoughts/ideas is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Everyone,

I am currently looking into Accelerated BSN programs in Southern California. I am thinking of applying to Concordia University, CSU Fullerton, CSU LA, CSU San Marcos, and Nationa University. Does anyone have any insight into these programs? What would you say are the main things I should be looking for in the programs I am applying to?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations in regards to scholarship options?

Thank you so much!!

Best,

Heather

The tax withholding is based on your deductions mine usually was about 17%. As of the first of the year they began withholding taxes from the tuition portion as well, which is again based on your W4. They don't withhold state taxes.

They withhold all taxes before we get our stipends/tuition payment. For me, after taxes are withheld each month, about $1240 gets deposited into my account for the stipend (I'm single and am not a dependent). As for taxes, that has been the difficult part for me. I ended up owing over $3k for 2017 and so far have paid another $4k for 2018. Nurse Corps changed the tax system in 2018, so now all taxes come out prior to the payments. Before, we were responsible for paying it all at each tax season. However, relative to the tuition, it is still worth it for me. My tuition for the first year was about $60k and will be another $50k before I'm done. I took out a loan through my school to help pay the taxes. Hope this helps!

So they take out federal but not state before awards are actually disbursed? I thought I read something along the lines of them not handling any taxes this award year-2018/2019, that it all becomes the recipient's responsibility. Obviously if I am awarded I will be seeking an accountant's advice, just thought I'd ask a few of the past recipients about their experiences. I appreciate your input, thank you!
