Nurse Corps Scholarship "Required To Work 2 Years In Understaffed Facilities"

Published

Wondering if anyone on here has had any experience with the Nurse Corps scholarship.

To me it seems too good to be true...

Offering full tuition reimbursement, as well as all related fees, books, and a monthly allowance.

According to the website, everything is good and dandy, but on a different website, it says, "The Nurse Corps Scholarship is available to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a professional registered nurse program. Recipients of this award must agree to work for at least two years at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses. In addition to full - tuition, fees, and expenses; students will also receive a monthly stipend."

Just curious if anyone has used this scholarship. I was looking into it, but after seeing that I'm very hesitant. I don't want to get forced into working somewhere for 2 years with such a shortage of nurses (especially right out of school).

If anyone has any insight or experience with this, please let me know. I'm holding off on applying until I learn more.

I believe only BSN candidates are eligible not ASN or diploma. Check to be certain.

AND, BSN, MSN candidates can all apply. DNP candidates can apply also, but are in second tier, and will probably not get the scholarship.

When you go to the website and search underserved areas, understand that you will need to work in a facility that has a score of 14 or higher. An underserved area is determined by several factors, pn population aged over 65, percentage of population living below the poverty line, and percentage of health care providers in the area.

From what I have heard, they do deliver if you are awarded the scholarship, however you may not find out until as late as September 30th. That means you will have to find some other way to pay term Bill in the meantime. The hrs a will reimburse you if that happens, and they will reimburse any other organizations who pay.

They will not assign you to a particular facility you can pick and choose. You should check the website and see if any of those facilities that have a score of 14 or higher are places that you would like to work. For me, it was a no brainer. I definitely would prefer to work in an underserved community, and there is a hospital not too far that I would like to work in that qualifies.

I did a sort and there are a few locations near me. I'm going to look into reviews and other things for these facilities and decide if I want to pursue this from there.

Do you know if this scholarship would apply to a higher degree, by chance?

If I get my ASN through normal loans and want to do a BSN or MSN bridge, would it cover that bridge?

Yes, it does cover BSN and MSN bridge programs. But keep in mind, your income needs to be low enough for you to have an EFC of under 5500. If you are already working as a nurse when you apply, this is less likely.

Ahhh that is a great point. Thank you!

I know this thread is a couple of years old. But it has been most helpful, I am doing my due diligence and research my area and areas surrounding.

Thanks!
