I got my finalist email at like 9pm on Aug 12. I immediately accepted, I just logged in to my acct and it says "award accepted- under final review." But when I clicked on the "Your Signed Nurse Corps LRP contract" (just below the two green bars) it shows I received a designee signature on the 20th. I haven't gotten any other emails from HRSA yet...

I didn't even realize that bar was a hyperlink! Haha. I have the signature from Aug 20th as well! Thank you for the tip!

Hi! I just received  my nurse Corp welcome packet! It does say that it will be taxed and when I asked my accountant, she said that she does not know anything about it being tax free. Also if anyone can answer who has gotten a third year award, obviously with the award I will drop out of tier 1 for the third year. Will that affect my chances of an extension? Thank you!

Congratulations on receiving your welcome packet! I am starting my third year award this September. I think it will continue to be taxed since they are still withholding federal taxes from my monthly award. As for the third year extension, it is a continuation so you are judged on your initial tier and you receive 25% of your original loan for that third year. Hope that helps!

Hi everyone...I am so happy for each of you that received the award.  I got excited when I saw my credit checked at the end of May, May 25th but as of yet I have not gotten an award.  Still says under review.  It was my second year applying.  I know a lot of you guys have applied many more years and it is encouraging.  Thanks for sharing.

Just received my welcome packet email!! Hallelujah!!

I know some people were checking for a signature. If you received a signature on the hyperlink after you signed and accepted, that date will be your contract start date. So mine was signed on August 9th and that was the day my contract started.

Congratulations!

I just received mine 5 minutes ago too. They say they give out awards through the end of September so those that are still waiting don't lose hope. and if you don't receive it this year keep applying, this is my third try. good luck to those waiting.

For all those wondering about tax free, I asked nurse Corp and they said this is a loan repayment program and not loan forgiveness so doesn’t sound like it will be a tax free award…. My accountant doesn’t think so either…..

Those were exactly my thoughts, with the wording saying loan "forgiveness" I would think the loan repayment wouldn't fall under that umbrella. But I do hope it does for everyone's sake!! HRSA should 100% be able to tell you whether it does or not.

Congratulations to you!

Sadly, I am quite certain you are all correct and that it IS still taxable since it is a repayment and not forgiveness. It is curious that the National Health Service Corps loan repayment (which doctors but NOT nurses can receive and doesn't have to be in a non-profit) doesn't have taxes, but the program that nurses can receive IS taxed even though they are required to work in a non-profit with a high HPSA score. I'll be writing to my legislators! I think the time is ripe to advocate for nurses to have tax free loan repayment (especially since the COVID bill made loan forgiveness tax free). I'd encourage everyone applying this year or in future years to write to your legislators advocating for the nurse corps loan repayment to be tax free just like the NHSC loan repayment is! Thanks all!

You simply have to look at politics for the reason why...as you stated Dr's get their loans forgiven and tax free at that. Same with the PSLF which again a majority of doctors apply to...many Drs are politicians and therfore they write laws which benefit them alone. ?

AND they can make bigger donations! BUT..... politicians might jump on the "Help the Nurses/front line workers" bandwagon that we have going on right now due to COVID. Good publicity for them.

I think it's a great time to write our legislators and ask for Nurse Corps Loan Repayment to be made tax free ASAP. They can throw it in as an amendment to some other bill.
