Hello All,
I am applying for the nurse corps loan repayment program 2016 cycle, I just spoke to a representative who told me the application cycle opens up tomorrow. For those of you who have applied any tips advice etc.? I am very excited about this opportunity because I have an outrageous amount of loans.
Does anyone know if the HPSA score must match your specialty? My facility is a 17 for mental health, but not considered in a shortage area for primary care. I work as an acute care NP, so really neither of these fits my specialty.
I was wondering the same thing my facility score is a 21 for primary care and mental health but I'm a case manager, have you called and asked a representative?
Good luck to everyone applying this year. This is my 4th year applying and I'm praying that I will be awarded this year!! What a grueling process! My hospital score is 13, but because we provide mental health, our score shows a 16. I was told that even though I do not work in mental health, that they will accept the 16 score because our facility can offer that to the community. My D/I ratio is around 150%. Unfortunately, not all of the HRSA respresentatives will give you the same information, but what I have gathered is this...if you do not meet the requirements of the application, they will reject the application and you will know about the same time that awards start going out, if not sooner. If you meet all of the application requirements and are "in the running", your status will show "Under Review" until A) you receive the award, or B)they run out of money and no more awards can be given. The last 3 years, I would have to wait unitl the end of August to find out that there were no more funds for awards. Very depressing. Following the threads from the last 3 years, it seems that some awards are given at random. It's confusing to try and decipher how all of the awards are given, and the representatives can't really break it down for us. I've seen some RN's receive awards from Tier 2, while some in Tier 1 have received nothing. Mass confusion is what it causes, but to receive the award would make it all worth it. I'm just thankful they changed the application process to allow us to pull our loans over, instead of having to enter each one manually. That was a nightmare! Here is hoping that this year they have more funding and that more of us will have a shot at receiving an award!!!

I totally agree with you the process is very confusing this is going to be a long wait for us all but I hope it ends with good results!
You are correct I don't understand the funding I can only go by what was here on this site and some nurses with high HPSA and high D/I were not funded. I have not had a credit check yet. Yes i do think it does not matter if you are not a MH provider, I only have an HPSA for MH of 17, and I am a utilization review nurse and not a MH nurse, as long as you are a nurse.
But yes its a long wait ahead.

Thanks for all this information. Really hope we all receive rewards. Are you all NPs or RNs??
I had no idea about this program. We will be done paying my student loans in a few months. I work at one of only a handful (less than 5 total) of facilities that provide mental health services in my state and I work in a urban hospital that serves a very disadvantaged population. I'm sure I could have qualified. I wish there was more information about this program available to people. Good luck to all of you that apply. Student loans are a huge burden and anything helps!
