A patient at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn viciously beat a 69-year-old nurse when she came to check on him Friday, leaving the woman with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The patient, Kwincii Jones, 40, lunged at Evelyn Lynch as she approached his bedside at about 4:30 p.m. , police sources said.

Another nurse later investigated an intercom alert that was coming from Jones' room and found the suspect "stomping on Lynch's head," one police source said.

"He beat the crap out of her," the police source said. "He jumped out of bed and stomped on her. She was bleeding from the head."

Lynch was rushed to Kings County Hospital where she underwent brain surgery Friday night. She was listed in critical condition.

Jones had been admitted to the hospital on Linden Blvd. in East Flatbush on Wednesday after complaining of stomach pains, police sources said.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the attack.

Every patient is a potential psych patient, even at 0430. Poor nurse, I hope she is going to be OK. Sheesh!

I don't know of she is. There are mixed reports, some saying she didn't make it :(

I couldn't find the article on the linked page so I don't know the details, but I would like to point out that most mental health and psychiatric patients are not violent and most assaults on health care workers are by people who are not psych patients.

Reason #39173 to stay armed. Signs and good intentions don't stop violence. This is the world, dress accordingly. Don't mean to sound cold, but in that environment, if you're not a step ahead, you're 10 steps behind.

I know exactly what you mean especially in that hospital. But it's disgusting that that happened to her in a job where she is there to care for people. I can't man...

Does someone have a direct link to the story?

It is awful. The assumption of safety anywhere is nothing more than an illusion. "Violence free workspace", "gun free zone", "safe zone", all just suggestions....hollow words that fall on deaf ears when someone is fixing for violence.

Dear Lord, this is awful. Seventy years old!

When there is patient-on-staff violence in hospitals here, there is often a work action for a few hours. Not a strike, but going down to minimum, holiday-level staffing and service provision while everyone else attends an "informational meeting". Do they do anything like that in the US?

I don't mean to sound critical, nothing personal, but what does an informational meeting accomplish?

As of this morning's local NYC news reports have heard nothing about the nurse who was attacked having expired. She is in critical condition with facial fractures, other injuries and recovering from brain surgery.

Local news media seems to be all over the place in terms of what exactly happened. But the gist of the attack seems to be the nurse was knocked down and beaten by the patient (stomping about head/face) and may have been also attacked with an IV pole. As to who or whom stopped the attack again stories vary. Sources report the man stopped when another nurse entered the room and he went to hide in the bathroom, other sources say a group of nurses/healthcare workers entered room and ordered him to cease the attack and he then ran into the loo...

As for my part I'm like you're co-worker, an elderly lady is getting beat down and all you are doing is (ordering) the patient/attacker to stop? Apparently the beating was very brutal as blood was all over the room.
