NRP required BEFORE hire?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I am not sure I am posting this in the right place.

I am a new grad nurse and I had an interview for a nursery/pp position within the hospital system that I work for. During the interview, the charge nurse made it clear that the position required me to have NRP before I started. Is this normal?

Most hospital will give you 30 days to 6-months from hire date to have all your credentials. But it also depends on the unit you are applying and what the norm is for that specific unit.

I don't see anything too unusual about that. Most people applying for those units would already have it anyway.

Eh, usually they give you six months so the hospital could put a class on.

Thanks for the responses. I was freaking out because of that. I wasn't able to find any open classes in my city when I posted this, but I found someone who will do a skills check-off for me if they do offer me the position :-)

There are online options for the didactic portion of NRP... googling should bring them up for you. Good luck!

You can buy the book and take the online portion of the course (exams for all 9 chapters) at your convenience. I think it was about $150. If you have that under your belt and are signed up for a class as soon as one is available, most hiring managers will accept that. A lot of places require it before the job because then they don't have to pay for it. I did mine just because all of the jobs I wanted seemed to want it, and I am still looking for a job. New grad jobs are hard to get, so I suggest you do it if you can!
