NPs Losing Ground?

Hi,

I was talking to a Nurse Practitioner in another state and mentioned a few years ago South Carolina lost our ability to write for schedule 2's and the language in our practice act was changed from collaborative agreement to supervisory agreement.

Have any of you notice similar changes in your states?

No, I actually see more progression for NPs in my state - I'm in the Northeast.

Same here. The northeast is really progressive with APRN's, and last I've read they are trying to push out the "collaboration" from the wording.

We're climbing higher in Tennessee, I suggest they rally the NP/PA troops in SC, ironically...I notice on wiki a lot of "R's" on the political affiliations...I guess that's what S. Carolinians WANT to pay for. That's the great quality about this country, we can look to SC to "lead the way!" Cha-ching!

Actually there was a case going on a few weeks ago in Tennessee (I haven't checked for updates) where the legislature is hearing testimony regarding limiting the practice of NPs. There are a few NPs (along with PAs) who have chronic pain mgmt clinics...seems an MD (who has another MD friend in the state legislature) who has grown weary of the competition.

I'm not sure what sandnnw is referring to when citing wiki as a reference for things, but it sounds like he/she has a rather low opinion of South Carolina.

The state nurses' associations lobby individual state legislatures to maintain nurse practice acts...remember, a nurse is only what he/she is defined as by state legislature. I think the underlying question should be, "How long are we going to continue to allow state legislators who may or may not know anything about nursing to define the scope of our practice?"

Well, since the state legislatures control our licensure, regulation and practice, I would guess that we're going to continue to "allow" that for a long time ... :) It's not any different for physicians, psychologists, cosmetologist, architects, or any other licensed occupation/profession.

Hey Mac5!

Just to update you... That flopped when forwarded to the upper committee...dead as far as the TNA is concerned. :)

SC is beautiful, I do not have a low opinion of it, I was merely pointing out that for a conservative state, hence a lot of "R's" they will be spending a higher amount of Medicare and Medicaid $$$ by limiting PCPs, increasing insurance premiums, it doesn't really make sense. PAs & NPs are fully qualified to prescribe these Rxs. I write 1-2 per day, never a complaint!!!

Have a nice day.

Sigh. Every now and again I venture onto this site in hopes of learning a bit, or perhaps even taking a gander at an interesting or intelligent posting. Oh well.

well dog...all I can say is...

My post was merely trying to update a previous one, with a little comic relief interjected, I occasionally digress into juvenile, Bill Maher political satire...simply for a chuckle...certainly no harm, no foul or personally insulting as others have chosen to go...

Facts are facts, you can dispute that all day long if you can find someone who will listen/read...(I did include my source, a step above)

If you would like to "learn a bit", I welcome you to come across the lawn to my VA, its not far from your hallowed halls...we are hiring!

At the very least, you made an, "interesting and intelligent" choice of liberal graduate schools...as did I.

As you gain experience in the NP world, I believe you will literally "feel" what I mean, welcome...alum! Go get'em tiger...

This again points out that we, as APNs, need to be politically aware of what is going on in our states!

Errrr.......I don't work in the "hallowed halls", and never attended the "interesting and intelligent" graduate school to which you refer. Can't always trust the profile stuff ya know. Accepted, but not interested. Way too many "D's" around those parts! Anywho....you can have your opinion.....and I can have mine.
