NP Salaries/Location/Specialties

I have been talking to NP's across different specialties and some make upwards of $220,000/year after taxes. I was wondering if you are currently working as a NP and are willing to share the following:

Specialty

Salary

Location

Thank you for sharing.

Specializes in Emergency, ICU.

Why do people think $220 k is too much for an NP? I'm honestly curious about this. Why do NPs feel unworthy? For the responsibility and work involved, I find the $200,000+ range completely reasonable.

Who said anything about being "unworthy" of $220k? I pointed out that someone working 12-16 hr days is not truly making that salary.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I don't think it is too much and have insisted on being adequately compensated since I was a new grad. I usually base my salary requirements on physician wages in the area and I aim for 75-85% of their salaries.

Specializes in Surgery.

No one said NPs are not worthy--it's just not realistic at one, 40 hour job..

I'd disagree that it isn't realistic for someone at the high end of our pay scale. If my math is correct its only $105 an hour for a 40h week, right? Although I work different jobs my average hourly rate is $95 an hour so I'd be close if I chose to only work 40h a week M-F.

Well then I stand corrected and good for you!

A Psych NP who works for a private practice in Memphis, TN. She sees 4 pts/hour and works 12-16 hour days. She said he gets paid per pt she sees.

Any NP making >50.00 an hour could make that same salary if they were working 12-16 hours per day. The NP you are talking of doesn't make the great money you think s/he does.....they are just working a ton of overtime and seeing patients very very quickly...both of which are lifestyle and professional options/choices I refuse to make.

Texas

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.
That sounds a bit more reasonable BUT..have you ever actually BEEN to South Texas??? Salaries are inflated in that area for a big reason. It's very near the border, poverty is horrendous and resources are very limited. School districts are struggling and they have a hard time attracting providers of all types to that area so they have to inflate the salaries.

You are not pulling up real world normal people salaries in your "salary surveys." None of us are going to report salaries in that range because most of us prefer our nice suburbs where our kids go to good schools and pretty much none of us are going to want to work 12-16 hr days.

Depends where in south Texas. The RGV? Corpus Christi? Houston? If the RGV, then yeah. It is near the border & poverty is bad. But for the rest of the areas that are considered south Texas aren't that bad.

But they are actually making that "great money". They might have what we would consider a reduced quality of life because of the hours they are putting in but they absolutely are making that money.

Not everyone but in the psych specialty in this area there are quite a few of us doing rather well. Employers endured some sticker shock and we had to withstand some resistance but we get it. I actually had one administrator say to the medical director attempting to bring me on "We aren't paying that for a nurse". I said "Please tell them they will pay that if they want this nurse". I'm still working there, lol. :D
