Not satisfied with Kaplan

Published

I am currently completing a Kaplan NCLEX review class. It was the only one offered at a discount at my school, so I took it. I'm not impressed so far. The decision tree has turned out to be a dud, as many questions can't be answered that way. And now I realize, maybe I should have taken a class with a little more content review. Are there other NCLEX prep companies out there that are better than Kaplan?

I am an international nurse from Nepal.I have got my eligibility letter for nclex rn. I have enrolled in Kaplan class room review. I just wnt to know what are the strategies to pass nclex? When I start reviewing the content I just get so hopeless feeling that Will I do it? I am new to this country, hope I get friends who we guide me to cross this iron gate of nclex . All your valuable suggestions will be appreciated.

DO HURST!! dont do kaplan.

I did the online Hurst too. Finished at 75 and got the good pop up. If I really did pass, I will say that aside from myself, I have to give it to Hurst. They taught things in a way that will really stick in your head and recite it in your sleep, when you wake up, when you take a bath, everywhere. It's kinda creepy because I can hear Aunt Marlene and the rest of the instructors in my head during the test. Print the content book and treat it like a "nursing bible"

In fairness to Kaplan, their QBank and QTrainers are at par with the actual exam.

If your are pretty confident with your core content, especially if you're a fresh graduate, do Kaplan.

If you are a foreign student or graduated a long time ago and if you feel like you've lost a grasp of your content, do Hurst.

I am doing the Hurst Online NCLEX Review and just started this week. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! They focus on content and their explanations are clear, simple, and easy to follow. I'm using Saunders, Mosby and Lippincott NCLEX questions for reinforcement.

I am not satisfied too !!!

I paid for Kaplan and the NCLEX Review on learningext.com and to be honest I think the only thing that helped was answering question after question after question. The decision tree was completely unhelpful and the content of NCLEX was so ridiculous at times that I didn't know the majority of the procedures and medications. However, I passed at 75 questions on my first try because I had the strategy to answer the questions down. I downloaded applications on my phone that would strictly offer advice on why the answer was correct but also how you could deduce it to the correct answer if you literally had no idea what the question was asking.

Mind you, I did graduate with a strong GPA so I do know my content pretty well, but when you are consistently being asked the higher level questions during the NCLEX there is noway you will know everything or be able to study everything. If you take anything from this post, answer 100 questions everyday up until NCLEX, take the day before NCLEX off and relax and just relax, don't cram and you will do well. Good luck :)

I think the quality of Kaplan depends on the instructor as well and the pace that the class is doing the questions; sometimes we would spend 20 minutes on just one question. I like the concept of the Decision Tree, but when you reach Step 5, it's pretty much you either know it or you don't. I will say that the wealth of questions Kaplan supplies you with is pretty nice though.

However, I tend to agree with others and say that I favor Hurst a little bit more.

Turned out NCSBN's review will not work on my computer (I have a MacBook), so I am just sticking with Kaplan. And Kaplan does have content review, which I found in the toolbox. While going through the lectures, there were a lot of times I said to myself "I knew that". Nerves got the better of me when I first wrote this post, and I think I'll be okay with just Kaplan.

Check out Comprehensive review for nclex-rn by maryann hogan.. It has theory review also and practice questions, thats what I'm using now, and I'm pretty contented with it, I'm also attending a review class in Bakersfield, they use the same review book. It's great! Actually

I think Kaplan has alot to offer and is very organized. I am an independent NCLEX tutor and I see it like this...the bottom line is that you need to be able to answer application questions!! Knowing knowledge is not going to get you a passing score on the NCLEX. Learning how to answer the questions, which are different than in nursing school, is a VIP part of the preparation process for taking your licensure exam.

You may have had a mediocre teacher and didn't pick up on the importance of learning HOW to answer the questions. I am tutoring several student right now and they are thrilled with the Kaplan NCLEX review book...but of course, I am working one-on-one with them and adding my personalized touch to it.

It's all in perspective. As an independent NCLEX tutor, I believe that learning the art of answering application questions is as equally important as knowing subject content. But what is the use of studying subject matter if you can't pass the exam?
