Northwest in Senatobia

Published

Has anyone applied for or attends Northwest in Senatobia?

Also, if your uniforms or lab coats do not come with patches on them, be sure to get them right away! It has been a pain to try to get them.

For those of you already in nursing school-any tips to prepare ourselves for what's to come? What is the one thing you said "Man, I wish I would have known that before I started?"

I wish someone would have sat me down and taught me how to study for the tests! You HAVE to study by applying the information. You CAN'T just MEMORIZE! I also found that you can't just sit down and study the night before the test and plan to make a good grade. Also remember that just because you're not making an "A" doesn't mean you should freak out! A nurse who passes with a "C" is still a nurse! Nursing school is completely different from anything you've ever done before. So don't beat yourself up if you don't make an "A" on your first test. If you pass, congratulate yourself, because that's tough to do in and of itself sometimes! I hope this doesn't scare you guys. You'll take it as words of encouragement once you're actually in the program! :) Good luck to you all. And remember to breathe.

Thanks for the replys... I was just wondering if the white crocs are appropriate.. I need to go ahead and get some of my stuff bought..

Has anyone completed their physical for school yet?? I went yesterday and had to have FOUR shots, and I have to go back tomorrow and get another one they forgot about!!! If you haven't looked at your physical form yet you may want to start--you have to have proof of your MMRs from when you were a child--took me forever to track those down!! The doctor I went to had to go to the storage unit because my records are 25 years old and had been "purged"!! My two and three year old went with me and were very excited to see mommy get so many shots!! My son (3year old) said "don't worry mommy, I will take care of you!"

Is there anything else that we can go ahead and buy besides the shoes? I would love to get some nursing stuff for Christmas!!

Well I didn't attend your school..but I'll tell you some must haves I had to get:

Stethescope (if you can afford Littmann they are good. My school required one with a diaphragm AND bell..some do not have a bell..so watch for that)

Pen Light (I recommend buying the kind with replacable batteries..if your kids get a hold of it you can go through them pretty quick lol. I think I'm on #4..this time with replacable batteries! lol)

Bandage Scissors

Watch! One with second hand that you can see and read lol

Lots of good black pens

All school supplies are good: lots of pencils for those tests, highlighters, papers, BIG binders that are heavy duty..I recommend D ring and a minimum 2.5 " per nursing course; filler paper; tabbed dividers (I like the write on kind); 3 hole puncher, stapler (one that can do lots of pages.. actually those little ones work pretty good!)

We communicate a lot through email and discussion boards...so if you wanna think really big get a laptop lol. I LOVE sitting on my couch with my wireless internet hehe. I can print too..I have a brother printer with built in network card. Make sure those ink cartridges are FULL ... I also buy printer paper that already has the holes punched in them... saves hole punching time! lol

A digital recorder - never bought one and wish I would have! I hear olympia are good..look for the kind that plugs in your USB port to download to CD.

If you really have $ to spare...I would have LOVED a PDA. You can buy drug guides, taber dictionary, lab guides, etc to put on there. Your clinical group would LOVE you! lol I plan to buy myself one for graduation so I can easily look up meds and stuff on the floor. Much lighter than carrying around a bunch of reference books.

A good backpack or rolly case..nursing books are HEAVY! lol

Another personal recommendation: A smaller bag .. you can get one with those cute little stick figure nurses if you feel nursey :) I would keep all my clinical stuff in there... you will also likely have name badges and things. You do NOT want to forget something for clinical..at my school that is being unprepared and you can get you a clinical unsatisfactory. Keep it all in one place and you'll never forget anything :)

You'll want an up to date drug guide. We use Davis which I like.. but you might check with your school bookstore and see which one they sell for your nursing program. A Taber's dictionary is also very very good. I had this huge Dorland's dictionary so didn't think I needed a Tabers. WRONG. The Tabers is small and compact..and easy to read, and is more geared towards nursing. One time I looked up a term in the Dorlands and had to look up 8 subsequent words to get to the actual meaning of the first word! lol So get a tabers!

I'm sure I'm forgetting something but that's some of my recommendations as a student graduating in the spring from a TN college :)

Mommy

Good question RNStudent&Momof2! Good answers Mommy Nurse2b! My family is also asking what "Santa" should bring to help get me started. Everyone has really been great to share advice on this site. Thanks!!!

I got a PDA for Christmas! What software would you recommed buying-or should I just wait until I start school?

Cool ...wish I would have got one! Not sure about software though. Very patiently waiting to start!

Sorry, I don't have one, and know nothing about them! But I've heard they're very handy! Good luck, and congrats on your acceptance!

Well I still don't have my PDA. Plan to get one when I graduate..so I haven't TRIED the software - but I would start with a drug guide for sure! Then probably hmm a Tabers, lab book, and then possibly some med surg guide. Like maybe where you can click on a condition/medical dx and see etiology, patho, s/s, diagnostics, and nursing care.

I'm a FII at NWCC right now and we aren't allowed to wear white crocs. You have to have a completely white shoe, yes you can have a little grey on the sole and maybe a small amount of color that you can cover with white shoe polish but generally it all has to be white. It has to be a closed heel. So the way crocs are open on the heels won't work. You can't have straps either it has to be a complete white shoe. Wal-mart has a complete nursing department in the shoe area now depending what store you go to. Also I agree with the Shoe Carnival, payless has some sometimes that are decent, and hibbets is a good place. Just make sure they are comfortable you are going to be standing a good bit and need comfort.

Hope it helps,

Kim
