Hi All,
I just received news that I have been accepted into Northeastern's Direct Entry online accelerated nursing program. I am wondering if anyone else is also in the spring 2014 cohort? Just thought I would get a thread going to communicate details such as living arrangements, loans, what to expect etc.
NS14: I never spoke with anyone who is actually in the program, but read some people's comments on one of the NEU forums here. They were not overall that great, but I really don't think the program is all that bad. I don't think NEU would continue this program if it was that bad. It could be that those people are not doing well with the online thing and are blaming NEU for it...I don't know...It could be anything...
Hi faith2014,
Sorry you haven't been able to speak with students from previous cohorts. I am from a previous cohort. I can assure you that the negative reviews you have read are not inaccurate, and none of my peers are blaming NEU. When we started the program we very well understood that there would be several issues to fix, as it was a brand new program. Most of us were very used to "the online thing". The problem is that when you are paying 60k for a BSN you expect quality. Also, when your primary method of learning very important material is online there needs to be enough support in order for it to work. The presentations are nothing more than choppy power points with poor audio ( sometimes there were distracting animals in the background). More importantly, some of the instructors would take too long to reply to us. One of our instructors literally took weeks to return graded assignments. Another instructor did not respond to students for at least 1-2 weeks, and her reason was that she was "busy making memories with her children at Disney".
Another major issue that many people have with this program is the "Masters" part which others have spoken about. Good luck
Edarcy 1991,
It was easy to form study groups. It seemed as though most wanted to have study partners. One of the positives of the program is that many friendships were formed. Although my cohort has graduated, many people have still remained pretty close. I am happy with the fact that I graduated and will be taking nclex soon. However, I am not happy with the fact that I rushed into the program adding another 60k to my student loans(and now have to reapply to different MSN programs). The program is doable, but very difficult. As Boston 123 mentioned, I would not recommend working much.
Koala007: Thank you for sharing that information with us. I haven't heard much good stuff about the progran. And you are right: $60k is quite a bit of money to be spent in a program where we don't even have the right to have our questions answered promptly. And being a hybrid program, we would think they would be easier to reach by email.
Oh, and my acceptance is pending because they are too irresponsible and disorganized. They wanted my transcripts with a prerequisite that was not completed when I applied. So, they were sent over 2 weeks ago. They said they got it and they were being sent to scanning. I already called 3 times and they lied to me. I actually told them the infornation was incorrect and the girl was speechless. She told me to wait until the end of the week. Does it take almost 3 weeks to scan a piece of paper???????
The graduate admissions office keeps telling me my advisor in Burlington can see my transcripts. Then I call the advisor in Burlington and she tells me it is not on the system yet. I call the graduate admissions office again and say that my advisor can't see it and the transcripts that i sent over 2 weeks ago...they get speechless, like they lied to me and I found out. They tell me they will send it to scanning right away, but they never do. I am getting mad, you know? These initial signs of disorganization should open our eyes to the type of stuff we will be dealing with. And it will get worse!!!
Eburgmeier: that's awful that you are still waiting! And you have a big move to plan!! They need to get their "stuff" together and act like the great institution they claim to be.
I am very disappointed with NEU so far...Very disappointed! !
Thanks koala007. Can you also tell me what the math test that people have been referencing that can make or break you? Is it medical dosage? Basic math? Stats? How does the program run, fall, spring, summer, fall? Any breaks? Also, what was the process in reference to the MS. Basically no one moves onto a MS through them? How did that pan out?
Thank you so much for your time in answering these questions, its really helpful. My deposit is due Monday so I have to make up my mind soon!
faith2014- when i sent my information, they had me send it directly to the burlington campus. Who is your advisor? They really are ridiculously unorganized. The lady who was running the program doesnt work for them anymore either so that may be part of it. On my acceptance there was a number to a woman who was the director and i tried contacting her to find out she has left NEU. I dont know if she was fired or if she just quit? Who knows.
Faith2014 & edarcy1991 you're welcome.
edarcy1991- The math tests that people are mentioning involve medical dosage and calculations. The problem is you are not really instructed beforehand. I suggest using various outside resources. There are several free websites that have tons of practice questions and instruction on proper set up. Expect to be on site for clinical, labs, tests, etc. for 3-4 days/week. There are a couple of 1-2 week breaks in between. The longest break is Dec-Jan, but the program is year round. They follow the NEU undergraduate calendar posted on the school's regular website. Before graduating we were told that the guaranteed MS options for the hybrid students include Administration (not sure on work experience requirement) and Neonatal (requires quite a bit of experience before accepted), and maybe Psych. However, you are not automatically enrolled. You are required to complete a minimum of 2 semesters of "co-op" before you are able to move on to the next step. Regarding co-op, it is not the traditional NEU co-op experience. The hybrid co-op is basically you applying for and passing boards and finding your own full time job.
koala007-
you're help is more than appreciated! You're much more clear than they are over the phone. They try to keep everything vague to avoid having to tell the truth. I dont mind 2 semesters off to work, it will be nice to make some money for the ridiculous loan I will have to take. My fear is that NP is becoming a doctorate and by the time Im done with the program/co-op hours, I may have to be applying to a doctorate program vs a masters which is more schooling and more expensive I would assume.
Is anyone actually registered for Fall 2014 cohort already??

Lfrieda7: Thank you so much for sharing that info with us. Are you currently in the program? How are the online lectures? What about the labs? And what med test is that? Is it about basic math? So, we r not even guaranteed to be in the Adm track? Well, I don't think I will get my master's there anyways. I am just interested in the BSN portion since I am hearing so much biased information about the specialty tracks. Is the program doable?
