Northeastern Direct-Entry NP

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hi,

Years ago I met with the director of this program and really loved it. Over the past 2+ years I've been doing the prereqs and volunteering at a hospital. It began to go to the backburner because I felt an accel BSN would be a better choice. Well now that I am ready to apply :yeah: I can't get this program out of my head as being the top choice. SO I'm aiming on the GRE's for Sept to apply for their deadline. Just wanted to see if any students could provide some input on their experience there, and post graduation. I had a NP a few years ago at Harvard Vanguard in Copley who was a graduate and said such great things. I also can see that only Northeastern students get these intern positions at MGH (I'm sure there are internships open to all as well, but I see just Northeastern ones- I'm an employee at Partners). This makes me think they have an advantage... anywho, any feedback would be sooo greatly appreciated!!:redbeathe

Thanks!

I don't know. I only got accepted today and have just a week to send in my deposit. That's very little time for very little information about a program. I'm supposed to be getting a packet in the mail with more info, but we'll see. I'm not sure how keen I am on the whole online course set up. Not being able to ask questions when I have them is bothersome. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Got my flat-out rejection in the mail today. Not doing so well, but I guess that's to be expected.

@Barbara, I feel for you! It was a total self-esteem kicker for me, and I'm having a hard time bringing myself back up. But in the end, it's their loss, we're still going to become fantastic FNPs no matter what!

As for the hybrid program, I was accepted to that too and am a little skeptical about it.. I have taken online classes before and for some reason they just seem harder to me?? Not having a teacher to go to with questions makes it really difficult. Also I'm from Cincinnati, so it would be a serious relocation for me as well.. They told me that along with the nursing administration, neonatal np would also be available as an option - just throwing that out there!

has anyone talked to the heads of other tracks, besides neonatal and administration, to see if it would be feasible to get into these tracks after completing the BSN portion of the program? Does anyone have any other information about this?

I recently found out that I was waitlisted for the regular Direct-Entry, but accepted into the hybrid version. I am interested in going into psychiatric/ mental health, and I asked * what the chances were of getting into the traditional program for PMHNP after completing the BSN portion and if our chances were any better then say an outsider applying for the first time. What she told me was basically no- that Northeastern in general looks for a good GPA first and foremost, and then takes everything else into account. She did say though, that everything else aside, if you had a good GPA, and some from Regis (was the example she used), had an equivalent GPA, coming from Northeastern, your application would be a bit stronger. Hope that helps a bit!

are you going to accept? would we have to take the GREs again and submit references etc. to reapply to the masters program to swtich tracks, things that the traditional program students would not have to deal with? I took my GREs in 2009 so if this was the case i definitely would have to take them again unless a streamlined process is created. Do you think we would be master's students or direct entry students at that point or in general at that time are both groups together and considered masters students? does that make sense?

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you would need to re-submit everything; and I think you would be applying as a masters student after completing the BSN hybrid portion. I would definitely double check this though. I really thought about this program a lot and the possibility of just doing the BSN portion as a hybrid and taking some time off to work- and while the program does seem interesting, I don't think I'm going to wind up accepting. I'm going to leave myself on the waitlist for the tradition program, but I was also accepted into MGH's direct entry program, which just seems like a better fit at this point. Knowing I want to go into Psych, I wouldn't have to worry about where I want to go and get my masters, and having classes in an actual classroom I just think would better prepare me. I really got a great impression from the northeastern faculty in general during my interview, but I've taken my share of online classes and I just don't think it's for me at this point in my life. What are your thoughts? I am interested to hear what other's are making of the program with the little information that is available

@jbl07001, I'm actually in the exact same situation (waitlisted in the traditional program) but I'm also going to MGH because I really want the actual classroom teaching.

@Ally- did you have a preference between the tradition program and northeastern and MGH- similarities/ differences, or any benefits from one to the other. I'm sending my deposit into MGH today and I'm sure I would be happy at either, but I'm considering keeping myself on the waitlist for the tradition program at northeastern as well.

I'm also staying on the waitlist at Northeastern (for the traditional program) at least for now. I just sent my deposit in to MGH yesterday. Originally, Northeastern was my first choice. I didn't have a great interview experience but I feel like the program is still a great program. However, I haven't been able to find anyone that has anything bad to say about the MGH program. I honestly don't know what I would do right now if I got off the waitlist at Northeastern as far as making a decision. But I'm just happy with having a confirmed spot in the fall at MGH.

I still haven't heard anything from Northeastern. I never got an interview, so I am assuming I didn't get in, but it would be nice to know. They were my first choice. I have gotten into MGH, Case Western and Vanderbilt, and I have sent in a deposti for MGH. I would still like to hear from Northeastern, though.
