I'm interviewing at North Shore University Manhasset for critical care fellowship. Everything seems to be great... nurse recruiter friendly and helpful, so is the floor where I interviewed. Anyone been thru the fellowship or heard anything about it? Any additional info would be greatly appreciated!
I went down to NS manhasset today, they said the nurse recruiter is at a different location and they are not allowed to give out her contact info. How on earth is anyone getting interviews when the fellowship is not posted on their site and you can't contact the recruiter?? This is really frustrating!! I did an amazing internship there and feel that I would have a good chance if I could get in touch with someone!! Any suggestions??
NurseFairy: i know this is a few years later but was wondering if you are still in the MICU at LIJ. I have an interview next week for the fellowship program, but i applied for both the ED & MICU. I really want to do SICU or ED, but the MICU was the only other fellowship posted along with CTICU. in case they do not ask me specifically which fellowship i prefer, i will just prepare myself to answer questions regarding my interest in both.
so what did you think about the MICU fellowship? did the classroom training help you? was the staff helpful and do they work well together? how is the nurse manager? anything you can give will be great! THANKS!!
Hi Lakers,
Congratulations on getting an interview and best of luck! Although the MICU may not be the unit you want, it is better to get your foot in the door, go through the fellowship, and then look for a transfer opportunity once you've fulfilled your fellowship requirement (2 years) rather then just wait for a fellowship to open in another department.
I found the classroom and simulation lab training to be quite helpful and the fellowship trainers were great. The nurse manager is not the same one as when I was there (and to answer your other question, no, I no longer work there).
Again...best of luck to you!
Sue
Oh and PS...when I worked there we were floated to the SICU when they were short staffed so you may just get to experience the SICU anyway and that way you can see if you do indeed want to work there.
Lakersoverlife, just wondering how your interview went?? I have an interview this week for the fellowship as well and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm a little nervous. Any info would be very helpful...what questions were asked? Any questions that caught you off guard?
NurseFairy, what was the environment like? Were they supportive? Also, if you don't mind me asking...how long were you at the MICU in LIJ? Why did you leave?
stephycakes: which fellowship are you being interviewed for? after a couple of weeks, i actually was able to get interviewed for what i really wanted, the ED. I prepared myself pretty extensively for it, and i think that really helped me. the recruiter basically asked me 5 questions...
1) Why do you want to work in the ED?
2) Tell me a time when you gave good customer service or went above and beyond for a patient.
3) Talk to me about a time when you had to handle an escalating situation or when you made a difficult decision.
4) Tell me how you work a diversity in patients (different age, race, culture, socioeconomic status, etc.)
5) Give me a full head-to-toe patient assessment on anybody you took care of.
Besides that, she went into great detail about how the fellowship itself, what it generally consisted of, plus she also showed me a binder of their benefits, insurance plans, tuition reimubursements, etc.
any other questions, feel free to ask!
hey lakers!
thanks so much for the info!! so then were you also interviewed for the other fellowship (MICU or CTICU??) or just for the ED? i'm being interviewed for the MICU...i'm happy with any ICU honestly cuz as a new grad i didn't think it was possible to start in critical care!
have you heard back from them? or have you gone back for the nurse manager interview and the program coordinator?
please let me know of anything else you think i should know or prepare for!! thanks again!
also who were you interviewed by?
I've attached the Critical Care Fellowship Schedule/Design for those of you wondering how the program flows. It is a year long program:
The program includes a blended learning program with the following components: (a) nurse leaders as mentors, (b) Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), AACN's web-based critical care curriculum, © professional seminars, (d) associate fellows (experienced critical care nurses educated in the art of preceptorship of new graduate nurse fellows), (e) master fellows (master's-prepared educators providing education and guidance to the nurse fellows during the length of the fellowship program), and (f) simulation as a learning strategy.
stephycakes: the 1st time i went to HR, i thought i would be interviewed for the ED, but the recruiter i had met with only interviewed for the critical care fellowships (MICU, SICU, CTICU, etc.) the ED was its own fellowship, therefore had its own recruiter.
i did my best to keep in touch with the recruiter, and within a few days, she scheduled me for a 2nd interview with the director of the ED tomorrow! i have a friend that got into the ED fellowship in July and shes helped me out with some of the questions i may expect, such as...
1) What would you do if you found a family arguing over whether to do everything possible for their patient or just to have comfort measures done?
2) Tell me a time when you took a leadership role and the challenges that you faced within that role.
I'm quite new to this site and i am not sure what the policies are of giving out names, but if you give me your email ill send you the names of the ppl i spoke with.
so how has your interview for the MICU went? have you had your 2nd or 3rd interview yet as well?
thanks so much lakers!! my interview was rescheduled for this thursday so i still have some time to prepare. congrats and good luck on your 2nd interview!! i am supposed to be interviewing with Ms. *** either way you can email me at [email protected]. keep me updated with your progress...really hope you get it!
