Seeking some feedback on NC hospital nurse requirements

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi, currently living in Connecticut. Work at a hospital similar in status to Duke Medical. The hospital already has had one of their hospital's become a magnet accredited hospital. Not sure if their other hospitals will or not, but they stopped hiring any nurse's with ASN's.

I am looking to move down South closer to family in Virgina and South Carolina. I know Raleigh and Durham area have big name hospital's. Curious do they only hire individual's with BSNs? Any hospitals should look at in the NC area? Is nursing in demand in NC? Up here difficult for new grads to find work.

Appreciate the feedback.

Most NC hospitals prefer BSNs. Smaller and/or rural hospitals will hire with ADNs, but if you're talking about places like Duke, you're going to need a BSN for sure. You might get lucky and get a job as an ADN if your work experience is stellar and perfectly matches what that unit looks for, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

If you are looking in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area in general, go with Duke if you want the prestige on your resume, but go with something in the UNC system if money matters more to you. Duke pays less than most large hospitals in North Carolina. They tried to offer me $20.74 with a year of experience while most hospitals in NC start new grads above $21 and I got offered almost $23 somewhere else with the same experience. Duke almost wants you to pay them for their name, but I have heard wonderful things about the UNC system as far as money and job satisfaction go.

Duke still hires ADNs (and of course Watts grads who from what I have seen are highly thought of). I know several who have been hired very recently. You need to enroll in a BSN program with in 2 years and graduate within 5 years. Duke's HR spoke to our cohort and said they use a points system to determine who they call for new grad interviews, if you look at the survey for the new grad posting that gives you can indication of what they give points for.

For the CNI is $22.48 an hr at Duke. UNC is $21.54 the first year, then $23.61 second year. UNC weekend differentials are much higher.

Duke just gave a "market increase raise" to be more competitive. WakeMed will hire an ADN nurse with commitment to BSN (experienced nurses mostly) Don't know a lot about UNC, it is beyond my driving limit (it is about 15-20 min farther than the 45 min drive to Duke). I know Duke is hiring, so is WakeMed. I got a recruitment call from them Monday (I had applied for a PRN job there). not sure about UNC
