Nonprofit vs. Profit?

I just started working as a CNA, so I'm rather limited to LTC because most hospitals require 1-2 years of experience. A month ago, I quit a low-paying CNA job with severe shortstaffing and extremely high turnover at a nonprofit nursing home (I just found out that state was called in, so I'm glad that I made it out before things got potentially ugly) and I'm looking into employment. I loved the residents, but the job itself could be grueling and dangerous. Charity warms my heart, but it doesn't pay my bills nor does it prevent on-the-job injuries. I know it sounds horrible that I care more so much about the money (Have I sold my soul to the devil?), but I don't think that I can endure another job that requires care of >20 people per CNA. I was told that for-profit nursing homes usually pay more and are less likely to be shortstaffed. I don't doubt this, but what are the catches to this? I'm currently look at a webpage of the local nursing homes to see if they're for profit and if they accept Medicaid.

I think this was discussed a while back on the LTC forum. I think it just all depends. I work for a for profit large corporation and some times I do feel like it is for profit. A lot of the non profits around here are run by or for religious groups. Sometimes a part of me would like to see if it would be different when the all mighty buck or profit isn't an issue. The staffing is normally better in the nonprofits, too.

Look and ask around....sometimes getting paid alot might not be good if you are always working shortstaffed and have other problems.

doubt it. They have to be competitive with each other so the pay is generally about the same, at least in my area.

True here too about the pay.

The for-profit(No Medicaid) facility I work for is definitely better staffed than the not-for I did my clinicals in. I think it would vary from facility to facility no matter if it was for-profit or not. The bad thing is that you don't REALLY know working conditions until you work there.
