No prerequisites taken, any chance?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey yall...I've been accepted to ECU for business for spring semester but am having a change of heart and really want to pursue nursing instead. I took bio last fall, I got an A. I took chem in high school and got a B. I have a 3.75 gpa. I could get my CNA cert this upcoming month...is there any chance I could get into an ADN nursing program for Fall 2017? I haven't taken anatomy and physiology or micro. I have taken philosophy, English (111 and 112) and general psych.

You wont hurt my feelings if you say no :). And I'm going in to talk to my college on Monday so I will know more then...

thanks!!!

You need to look at the requirements listed for the program(s) that interest you. Each school has its own criteria. Some require all prerequisites to be completed before application to the program, others allow some course(s) to be in progress. Some schools go on a point system, in which case, you may earn more points depending on how many of the courses are complete as well as the grades earned, etc., etc. There is no way we can give you a blanket statement other than to say that in general, the person who has the most "complete" file, with the "best" criteria is going to be ahead of the game as long as the selection process is merit-based. You will also need to determine which programs choose on merit, which choose on the lottery system, which use a combination, etc. As stated, each school has its own method of choosing their students for the program.

Technically, I have all the criteria required by the program I'm looking at. But I know it's a pretty competitive program and am wondering if I have a snowballs chance in heck...thanks for your reply!

Just apply if you meet the criteria for submitting an application. I highly doubt it but if you get in, great. If not then you already know what you have to do to make your application stronger then next time around.

The reason I doubt you get in even if you meet the minimum for applying is another applicant with more science courses completed would be a stronger candidate because they would be able to focus on all nursing classes once in the program. But this is all just speculation from an internet stranger with no idea of your specific, local nursing programs' admission criteria and policies. It's good that you already have a plan to go talk to the school of your interest, they will be able to give you a more personalized answer. Good Luck :)

I knew someone who did Statistics, Microbiology, Anatomy, and Physiology all in one semester. It can be done. :-)

All you have to take is micro and a&p? That's doable, depending on the application cycle and your school's requirements.

For my school, you can't apply before all your math and sciences are done, and the application cycle for fall ends in February, so I'd check with admissions first if I were you.

My school only looks at algebra, bio, chem grades and then the Teas score and an essay. Its a points system for admission and you don't get any extra points for having prereqs done. There are quite a few in my class that are doing A and P 1 with nursing 1. It doesn't hurt to try to apply.

It varies. In my school, they use the pre-reqs now for admission criteria. I was admitted under the old criteria so I did a handful during the program.
