No Pay iincrease for new ACLS?TELE cert??

Published

I currently work on a med-srug floor that will be going tele/medsurg. Of course we are required to get tele/acls certified for this. When I asked if we would get a pay raise I was told no. However, I have talked to some other RNs who work tele and they say they do get paid more.

I just want a general opinion from other tele/specialty nurses: Do YOU get paid more for your certs? Shouldnt I expect it with more work/ sicker pts?

Thanks for the input everyone. Apparently I wasnt the only one asking the question on my floor though. Several other nurses were as well.

Our hospital is a magnet hospital, although I am sure that doesnt make a difference. I know you get $1/hr more for BSN.

As for the pt load, I was told it will go down (right now we have 8), but on the one tele floor sometimes they have 7 if they are short.

I am happy to be getting my tele and ACLS cert, because as one poster said, I am more marketable, and everntually I want to be an MICU transport nurse, so this really is to my advantage. Just would be nice to get a little more pay for it, even if it is like 0.75.:uhoh3:

Here's what to expect in any job, not just nursing.

Don't expect to get a raise, ever. If you do get a raise it is considered a gift and you better be grateful and deserve all, if you're lucky, 3% of it. Of course that 3% doesn't keep up with inflation. So basically you never get a raise that puts you above what you're currently earning.

But of course that 3%, if you do get it, doesn't make up for the 12% that your health premium has increased this year. Nor does it make up for the additional $1000 that you are expected to pull out of your pocket for your medical insurance deductible.

Don't even get me going on money, I'm still making less than I was 10 years ago.

If you become certified in your chosen specialty, many hospitals will offer some sort of incentive such as a pay increase or yearly bonus. Specialty certifications often require a lot of study, significant cost, and sometimes there are requirements regarding years spent practicing in that specialty.

Certificats such as ACLS, BLS, and PALS, are often requirements to be eligible for employment depending on the area you are going into. They do not (nor should they) warrant an increase in pay. It's akin to asking for a pay increase because you have a nursing license. You don't get paid extra for having a license because you have to have to work in the first place.

I hope that clarified things for you.

We don't get extra pay for ACLS...we get to work in the area that requires it. Certs though (CCRN, PCCN, and whatever the med/surg one) gets a yearly bonus though (just one cert though) and they reimburse the cost of the test and prep materials after we pass.

It is a job requirement that I had ACLS, PALS, and TNCC within a year...so definitely no pay raise. More like, 'do this or you won't have a job.' :lol2:
