No need to be upset at the truth! Change careers

Nurses Relations

One thing that has baffled me on this website is individuals always are up in arms when the truth is, if you have no passion for the profession you need to make life decisions for yourself. Most individuals come on allnurses.com to complain about the nursing profession, long hours, nursing staff, arrogant doctors. The truth is, this is not Mcdonalds where you work the job because it's a requirement for survival. You entered into college and chose a profession that makes you miserable, spent countless hours studying a subject that you have no interest in, and entered the work field to make others who are passionate about their careers miserable. Yet, many complain that the healthcare field has taken a turn for the worse. Has it ever occurred to those same individuals, if there was no passion for the career to begin with there would be none after starting your first, second, third, or even tenth position?

Maybe it's my family values that taught me, if I don't love what I do there is no way I will ever be successful in life. Success is not defined by the basic salary, but level of contentment with my life all together.

So I say, if you hate nursing make life decisions so the rest of us can enjoy our jobs.

Are a lot of people out of work right now? Yep. And being grateful to just have a job is making it easier for administrations to make our working conditions even crappier. But crappy working conditions don't just hurt nurses. They hurt the patients we're trying to take care of. I'm so grateful to have a job that I'm not going to complain when they raise our ratios! And if a patient dies from failure to rescue because I've got too many patients, oh well. At least I have a job!! If I make a med error because I'm overly tired from not getting a break and kill a patient, well, at least I have a job!!

actualy NURSE practictioners prescribe medications and DIAGNOSE..so..uhm still not getting what your saying...I administer medications including injections..so..anyways my point is nursing wasn't always a title for what nurses do now so why get hung up on the specific of that it wasn't always called nursing. And like I said before NURSE practitioners prescribe medications and DIAGNOSE and ...whats your point? they are not Doctors they are Nurses...medical field is anything that has to do with medicine..I don't know where you live ...maybe you guys have a different definition..
Yes, but that's why they have the word "practitioner" in their title. Trust me, you (as a MA), me (as a LPN) and all general bedside RNs do not practice medicine. I guess it must seem like I'm dwelling with technicalities, but it IS an important distinction.

Just in case some of you did not know...the person who originally made this post made it because someone was saying they "Hate Nursing". That's not just something you throw around. And nursing is not "just a job" peoples lives are in your hands and if my family member went to a hospital and had a nurse that "hated nursing" and acted in that attitude I wouldn't want them caring for my family member. I would think most of you who actually are nurses would be offended at the fact that someone who is a nurse "hates nursing" where does that leave the patient...getting hateful care? where do they do that at? This is a DISCUSSION that's all it is...some agree some don't we are all entitle to opinions but I would think as a nurse you would care about the quality of care a patient receives...? Like I said before good luck in all you guys do I wish you well.

BrandonLPN ok.. but one thing is the person that I posted that post to...was a person who said that only Doctor's prescribe medications and diagnose which is not true because as a NP you are still a Nurse. And my mind is just blown at the fact that you can administer medication and things like that but we don't practice medicine...?

You shouldn't be just "content" or "happy" because you have a job and others want one. You can hate your job and still appreciate having one at the same time. However, when you hate your job not because of what you do but because of what you CAN'T do because staffing is unsafe, there's not enough supplies, and managers are all about the bottom line, it's different than hating what you do. I hope the OP gets a clue and stops letting people walk all over her and push her around. If she cares about patients and herself she'll get mad too. If you're not upset, you're not paying attention to the way our profession is being treated and how patient care is being affected. Or at least stops being so judgmental of people who aren't willing to just take it laying down.

To further clarify, you are called a medical assistant not because you practice medicine, but because you ASSIST the one who does (the doctor)

Nursing assistants are called such not because they practice nursing,

but because they ASSIST me, the licensed nurse. The ONLY ones who practice nursing are licensed LPNs and RNs.

The ONLY ones who practice medicine are licensed practioners.

I think a lot of the people that say they "hate nursing" really hate what nursing has become. A lot of people that "hate their jobs" go into nursing to do patient care, and are given more patients then they can handle combined with tons of paperwork.

So of course they'll be mad - it's not what they bargained for. I'm not even a nurse and have more sense than that. It's so easy to say, "oh, that nurse hates her job, she should so get out of nursing", and so difficult to be that nurse, who may have little ones at home, or an abusive husband, or whatever, and have no feasible way to escape that job. Americans especially don't like doing stuff they hate, in general. Most don't stay in a job they hate because they ENJOY hating their jobs.

I think the pre-nurses and nursing students here (and MAs) all need to take a deep breath and remember that you may not understand until you spend some time in the other person's shoes - for all you know, the nurse is having a bad day because her husband just died. Her parents died. She was in a car crash. Everyone has baggage, and it's awesome to think that it'll never affect you, but that is very unlikely to be the case.

Just IMHO.

I would think most of you who actually are nurses would be offended at the fact that someone who is a nurse "hates nursing" where does that leave the patient...getting hateful care?

I would assume competent care.

Quite a few people around hating their jobs. Yet my trash got picked up last week, electricity is still flowing into my house, and my food got made at Taco Bell a couple days ago. Nursing can get done by unhappy people too.

Am I the only one that finds this thread amusing in a sad and sardonic kind of way?:banghead:

Back to the original topic of this thread, I am a fiercely proud union member, and I will never give an inch of my benefits to management as long as possible.

At my facility we NEVER run short. They MUST pay over time if

necessary to ensure coverage for each and every shift for nurses and aides. Do you think this is because management loves it's workers and the residents so much??

I feel sorry for any nurses who do not work for a government facility and are not in a union.A nation wide nursing union would ensure a decent baseline for working conditions for nurses.

Love this, I am jealous of you as well. I totally agree and wish I was in a union! Staffing is the bane of nursing, they don't have enough nurses to take the patients they bring in, PERIOD.
