No job :(

I graduated with my ADN and I don't get any calls for the billion applications I've put in. I have no hospital experience and I was wondering if I could retire my license and work as a tech for a year and then get it reinstated. Has anyone every done this? It may sound crazy but I want to work.

I worked as a tech with my license intact until I got my job. I don't see why you would have to give up your license to do that.

I was told I could not be a tech with a RN license in Alabama without RN pay and nobody will do that.

WHO told you that? Unless you got your info from your BON directly...

Otherwise it sounds like you would otherwise be unable to work in mostly any other capacity in healthcare.

I have heard this too, from my nursing instructors who are/were DONs and Administrators. If you are an RN working as a tech, you are still held to the standards of your RN license, which creates a sticky situation because you need to respond to patients as an RN, however your job description at the facility limits you to tech duties. And in facilities with unions, there is usually a contract that an RN be paid as an RN no matter what job they are doing.

Can you commute to another state that you are not licensed in and work as a tech there?

I worked as a tech at a private clinic, actually I am still prn there in order to supplement my income. Perhaps hospitals will have those sorts of rules, I honestly don't know, but there are two other newly licensed RNs working in the same place I am because jobs are hard to come by. Unless the BON prohibits it, try private clinics instead of hospitals.

I would try the local Nursing Homes first.

you are right...you cannot work as a tech bc you are already an RN. Employers do not want liability and also do not want find a replacement for you soon since they know once an RN job opens up, you are gone. However you have no BSN, try applying to an affordable RN to BSN program....as most jobs want BSNs. Also try app for jobs at LTC, sub acute care centers, clinics, etc and/or move somewhere rural or a non-popular state, as these areas are more likely to give new grad with no experience a chance (incuding ASN).

Don't be scared of a nursing home the skilled units have plenty of need for RN's and are always short staffed. I will not sugar coat anything it is a tremendous amount of work however while there I managed care of patients with various post acute/surgical patients ex; post surgical CABG, AKA,TKA, Total Hip, Laminectomy, GI Bleed, Lobectomy, ORIF of the ankle, pneumonia, post subdural hematoma, Post CVA, management and care of tracheotomy, PEG and TPN feeding and tx of wound and wound vac. Also I am an RN with my BSN looking to go back for my Master's and still have a hard time finding a job, so don't be discouraged.-
