No insulin at school

So how do you handle an angry parent that insists she dropped off extra insulin at school but we have no sign of it? I have to call her tomorrow and don't want to say anything that makes her defensive but she says she dropped it off last week along with glucagon and my LPN is saying she doesn't remember getting it but she does remember the glucagon. I am really not good at confrontation. :(

This situation did force us to review our procedure for taking in meds and we are now going to have all meds signed in and out of the health office by the nurse and the parent in order to cover our butts.

Just be honest, state the facts as you know them and move forward with a plan to have her replace the insulin. No need to be confrontational, you were not there and moved an action plan to prevent in the future. Guarantee she finds it at home.

Facts, apologize for the situation and explain that there will be a new process going forward to make sure this never happens again. Sometimes an angry parent just wants to hear "I'm sorry" even if it is their own fault and they don't realize it yet.

What ended up happening? Did you call her? Did she put out a hit on you?:bag:

I did speak with her. She was upset but reasonable. After hearing the entire story I do think the LPN in the health office accidentally threw it away or somehow misplaced it. Mom requested that we reimburse her for the $50 copay she'll have to pay if she has to refill the subscription sooner than expected because one entire vial is missing. I had to forward that request on to my boss at the district level and I haven't heard back whether they will reimburse her or not.

The same LPN ended up making a med error later that day. A kid who should have gotten an antibiotic got an ADHD med. It was a bad day. :wtf:

Yep. The parent of the student who belongs to the ADHD meds was understanding and just said, "It happens."

The other student, the one who received the wrong med, is non English speaking so a voicemail was left via an interpreter. Haven't heard back from that one.
