We begin our last semester the last week of August but we're off for the summer. Anybody else doing this? We just finished the Med-Surg II and Ped rotation. When we left, we had a two patient load and the only skill we weren't doing was starting IV's (we do that in Complex in the Fall). I'm worried about going that long without doing anything and worried about jumping back into the groove.

Specializes in RN- Med/surg.

I remember doing that in school. It took a little adjusting when we got back..but our CI understood. After a couple of days we got back into the swing of things.

Same here but worse. We finished Med-surg II in November of 2007 and begin Med-Murg III in August, so essentially 9 mos. in between!

We had specialties this entire semester, no med-surg, and did very few skills besides vitals and a few PO meds. Yes, it's scary but I'm sure we will pick it up again somehow!

Wow I am finishing up my first semester and that is exactly what we do. our last clinical is May 20 and we are off until 2nd week of August.

I have never looked forward to the summer so much in my whole life!

why dont you do a externship ina hospital with the time you have off -- you will build your confidence up by the time you restart clinicals end of august

we get a 4 month break from aug. to sept each year in my NS. Its wierd going back to school after bc youve been off for so long!

Specializes in Acute Mental Health.

I'm part time so I won't have another clinical until jan. I thought it would make a huge difference, but I keep right up the full timers. After a week or two, I'm back in the swing of it all. If you are concerned, can you keep up with your skills in the nursing lab? Not sure its opened, but I know they always love it when we come in to practice. If you get lucky maybe you can apply for an extern postition. They are few and far between where I am.

At my school, we take med surg II in 2nd semester then take med surg III in 4th. In 3rd we take ob and peds which is totally different. With this 9 month wait, Im worried that my skills are going to be gone. I am doing a externship this summer so that will get me back were i need to be. If your not doing this, you should just read over the procedures to skills just so it can be fresh before school starts.

Specializes in Ortho, Neuro, Detox, Tele.

Yep...I spent my time picking up skills at work...and worked 36 hrs a week....It really helped me stay on top of what to do when we went back to clinical....or just stay on top of things with friends...

Specializes in ICU, Emergency Department.

We're in the same boat, which is why I applied for and luckily got an externship running from June 6-August 16. It will help me keep on top of my skills and learn to juggle multiple patients before school starts back up the last week of August.
