I love your excitement and enthusiasm! My advice work in peds or the NICU for a couple of years to find out what you really want. Learn the floor, learn your patient population, learn to be a good nurse and then make your decision based on your likes and dislikes. In most nursing areas you need at least experience before you can sit for certifications. You will not know what area you like until you work in it for awhile. For example I LOVE kids but I cannot repeat cannot handle a dying child, I also can not do the ER by any means. But, when I first started out I wanted to do peds oncology...not the area for me. I like cardiac, step down units and postpartum. I can handle a still born infant or dying adult but not a dying child and I didn't know until I experienced it. So, I am just saying give it time and you will be learning a lot as a new nurse so just pace yourself ok.
Good luck!

Hello everyone, I'm a SUPER new nurse and wanted to start looking into NP programs already. Each program has different requirements and I wanted to pick about 3 to 4 programs I felt would be best for me and focus on making sure I am the strongest applicant when I submit the application to the program. I do plan to run the floor about 1 to 2 year minimum before doing such. My problem comes in at, no knowing what exactly what type of NP I want to be. I know I either want to do Neonatal or Peds. I absolutely love CHILDREN & I've always known that I was meant to help them. My question being is there a way I could do both? Someone suggested becoming a FNP & getting certified in those areas. Is this possible? Also, what can I do as far as studying in my free time to make sure I stay up on current topics, disease processes, medications, etc. Lastly, what certifications can I get now as an RN to help with my overall goal of becoming an NP?
Thank you n advance to everyone who responds. I appreciate your input.
