NJCU ABSN 2014!

Published

Hi! Just thought I would start a new thread for NJCU, 2014 applicants! - Any thoughts/concerns regarding the application process or help from alumni is greatly appreciated! I'm applying to the Wall cohort for this May.

No problem! and thank you!

Hi Caitlin! Thank you for helping us out! Are there any people that commute into Jersey City? If so, do you know if they handle it okay? Also, do the students have any say in the clinical sites they go to? I think I read somewhere that we get Ipads ... is that true? Thank you again for your help!

Hey Caitlin!

Would you be able to tell us how the classes are set up, as in the schedule and hours we might be on campus?

1. I've heard from classes are from 8 am to 4 or 5 pm, others say longer, and that clinicals are from 7 am to 7 pm? what will our schedule be like for the first and second semester?

2. Do clinical rotations start right away? Are they certain days?

3. How many different clinical sites are there?

4. Are there any online classes?

5. Also, how much time out side of class do you recommend studying?

6. Are there dorms/on-campus housing for students or are we on our own? (i dont live in jersey currently)

7. I read something about an iTouch, is that something thats required and we have to buy beforehand?

8. If you fail a class do you have to repeat it and still take the next semester of classes at the same time, or do you get shifted to the next year, (i heard this about another school, wanted to know if it applied)

9. how are the professors?

10. how many students typically fail out/drop out/leave, at least in your class? and why?

11. how difficult are the classes, are some easier to handle then others?

sorry I have a million questions, and just trying to get as much information as possible before I do send in my deposit

I had to move up my wedding date from next year to this year, and I am scared as can be about being able to manage both

Not so much of the planning of the wedding, thats done, but the everything else I will have to be responsible for + school work.

I know its about 20-23 credits a semester, so it barely leaves time for a social life. eeks!

no problem at all! people from last year helped us out a lot so it's only right! as far as commuting, yes people commute from all over. north jersey, south jersey, new york.. it sucks but they just leave early cause there's always traffic. As for clinicals, yes for the second and third semester you can request a site and they will do their best to accommodate but you don't always get your first choice, unfortunately. However if you carpool with people you can specify that and they will put you together. And yes, we got ipad mini's which you guys will probably get

1. I've heard from classes are from 8 am to 4 or 5 pm, others say longer, and that clinicals are from 7 am to 7 pm? what will our schedule be like for the first and second semester? For the fall: On Monday, I had class from 8am-2pm, Tuesday 9am-3pm, Wednesday I had Health Assessment lab from 12-4pm (but another group had it 8am-12, so it depends), Thursday, for the first 6-7 weeks we had fundamentals lab from 8am-12pm (the other group had it 12-4), and then you move to clinicals at St. Annes (everyone has clinical there for the fall) from 7am-1pm for the rest of the semester. Friday you have open lab in the morning either 8-10 or 10-12 and that’s it. Nothing on the weekend. This semester I have class 9-12 Mondays, off Tuesday, class 9-4 Wednesday, clinical 7-330 Thursday, class 9-4 Friday and clinical Saturday. Saturday clinical depends with the time.. my OB rotation was 7-330 but my Pediatric rotation is 7-5 because it’s less days.

2. Do clinical rotations start right away? Are they certain days? In the fall you have fundamental lab for the first 6-7 weeks to learn all the skills and then you start at the nursing home. In the spring and im assuming the summer you start right away.

3. How many different clinical sites are there? We were given about 4 sites to choose from – Jersey City Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson, Clara Mass and Monmouth Medical Center. Newark Beth was on the list but I think our contract with them was up so they have to renew it.

4. Are there any online classes? In the fall we had IT (technology) and Pathophysiology online. This semester we don’t have any online – not sure about summer yet

5. Also, how much time out side of class do you recommend studying? Definitely at least a couple hours a day.. it’s a LOT of info to take in. Some professors give out study guides so you know what to focus on which is a big help. But I also recommend giving yourself a day to just relax and take a nap if you don’t have any tests coming up because you definitely need it. That’s what I do !

6. Are there dorms/on-campus housing for students or are we on our own? (i dont live in jersey currently) The school itself has dorms but I believe since this is a program for a second BA we are not offered that option, so you are on your own

7. I read something about an iTouch, is that something thats required and we have to buy beforehand? You do not need to buy one yourself. The school provides them to you (of course it’s all calculated into the tuition lol) but our class got mini Ipads and they’re great. You guys will probably get the same.

8. If you fail a class do you have to repeat it and still take the next semester of classes at the same time, or do you get shifted to the next year, (i heard this about another school, wanted to know if it applied) As far as I know, you get shifted to the next year. I believe that may have happened with someone in my class.

9. how are the professors? The professors, for the most part, are awesome. Some clinical instructors we had for labs and stuff were OK, but others are very helpful. Most professors are very helpful as well and ive never had a problem with them.

10. how many students typically fail out/drop out/leave, at least in your class? and why? I think we had 2 leave ours between fall and spring. Some people just decide it’s not for them and some people just don’t pass ..why im not sure.. maybe they just didn’t study or hand stuff in I honestly don’t know lol but is it difficult? Yes of course you’re getting a lot of info squished into 12 months… but it’s absolutely doable.

11. how difficult are the classes, are some easier to handle then others? There are definitely classes that are harder than others… some classes are easy A’s.. Patho is a toughy but ours was online so the quizzes and stuff were basically open book. Fundamentals and Health assessment are a little difficult because the tests are NCLEX style as opposed to straight forward questions.. you have to know how to apply the material. But after the first tests you get a feel for them and they aren’t so bad. As far as spring, its definitely harder. The material is a little harder especially Pharmacology.. but with Pharm we are allowed to have a big index card and put what ever info we want on it so that’s a plus.. but theres also a lot of group projects and assignments this semester so it’s more so the work load that’s crazy

Honestly.. there are people juggling things like you will be doing and they are ok. its tough but its so worth it! as long as you figure out time to do everything you will be fine. come up with a plan and schedule your time effectively thats the key

Hey Lizziefl21,

I was looking into private loans. Since this is a second degree, yet still undergraduate, it seems federal loans cap out at $9,500/year, which is nowhere near enough to cover. I have received offers from Discover in the past, and was considering using them as well. Be curious to hear what you have found in your research. If anyone else has advice on this topic, please chime in! :)

Thanks!

Hello Caitlin,

I just want to say thank you for being so awesome! Looking forward to starting up soon!

Best,

Chris

I called financial aid and she said that she will be at orientation to discuss everything. I thought she said that summer will be covered by federal (The max she said is 12,500.) she also said that she will bring a list of private lenders for us to choose from that have been successful with other students in the past!

aww thank you chris! I will also most likely be at your orientation along with other people from my class to speak with you guys and answer questions!

Hello everyone

Has anyone that sent in their deposit for Wall receive any type of confirmation that it was received? I haven't received anything, and the check has yet to be cashed.

I haven't received any type of confirmation, and my check hasn't been cashed either. I was also wondering what the hold up was!

Ok...so I'm not the only one. I just called someone in admissions and left a message. Hopefully I'll hear back from her today.
