Nitroglycerin

When a person is experiencing chest pain are they supposed to call 911 after the chest pain is unrelieved by the 1st dose or 3rd dose? Some books say 1st some say 3rd, so which is more appropriate in terms of NCLEX?

accdg to wat i've read,it should be done after givign the maximum dose w/c is the 3rd dose.

After 3rd dose, because chest pain has not been relieved, that's what you teach the patient.

Ok thanks! That's what I have seen most often, but one book I was reading said to instruct them to call after the 1st dose fails to relieve pain b/c its highly likely to be AMI and you don't want to delay care. I hate when I find these types of disparities -- makes me so confused :-)

When you find contradictions, pick an answer according to some reasonable criteria and stick with it. In reality, I would call after the first dose, but that is me and my way of looking at it. For the test, I would choose after the third dose because that is the answer I see most often.

I have read both responses when it comes to nitro and chest pain. If a patient has chest pain and takes one nitro after that they have to call for help (911), I read this in my pharmacology book and put that as an answer in my pharm quiz and got it right. On the other hand, I have read that if after the third nitro dose And chest pain is unrelieved then call for help.
