Nipissing SPP 2021 Applicants

Published

In the spirit of the last two years applicant posts (which I found super helpful):

Hello all! I’ve applied to Nipissing's Scholar Practitioner Program for Fall 2021. I’m super excited/anxious about it and would love to connect with other students who have applied.

How’s everything been going through your application process?

Hey I also got an offer. When I responded to the email I got an out of office reply saying out of office until June 28 but the deadline to accept is June 23. I followed up with admissions but did you get that too?

Yea I got that automated email as well. I followed up with admissions but the person contacted me back with details about when it’ll show up on ouac etc. So I’d just wait a bit but you could also follow up with admissions as well

Thanks for the response!

Finally got off the waitlist! :)

Hi all!

I just cancelled my offer to York's Second Entry Nursing Program and accepted my offer to Nipissing's SPP! Still waiting on an offer to UofT, but in case that doesn't come through, I am excited to begin this new journey with all those who have accepted their offers to Nipissing.

I'm wondering if it's too early to start a FB group for the SPP students starting in Fall 2021? Or, if there is one that already exists -- I would greatly appreciate if someone can send the link my way.

Hey! I was wondering why you chose Nipissing over York? I'm currently debating which program to do.

Hi, everyone! I recently accepted my offer to Nipissing, and am very excited to meet you all in the Fall. I was wondering whether a physical copy of the offer letter is being sent in the mail? Thanks in advance! ☺️

This was not an easy decision to make as I have already made friends with some lovely people who have accepted their offers to York. However, I had to be realistic with myself and so the following is my though process behind the decision to choose Nipissing over York.

1. Commute: I attended York for my undergrad and the commute absolutely drained me. I live in Toronto's east end and having to commute all the way up to York definitely had a negative impact on my academic performance. Not sure how everything is working during COVID, however, I don't want to take that chance for when classes go back to in-person learning. Nursing school demands a lot and I don't want to have to commute unnecessarily if there are options dt.

2. Strikes: I experienced 2 strikes at York and I am in no position to allow for another strike to disrupt me during nursing school. Just today, I read a post that York Members have approved a provisional strike timeline. It's only a matter of time. I have attached the post so that you can read it.

3. Placements: Placements at York aren't the best, and from what I have heard, you literally have to insist for placement coordinators to give you the placement you want. York placements seem to be in hospitals/organizations in the GTA such as Mackenzie health, Brampton Civic Hospital. I don't want to spend too much time commuting to my placements. I also want to work DT so these hospitals do not suit my preferences.

Also, downtown hospitals give priority firstly to UofT students, so they will always get their placement in organizations such as UHN etc. Nipissing students will also get placements at dt hospitals/organizations (UHN, SickKids, TPH).

Placements at Nipissing are 1:1 and so you won't have to share your learning experience with other students. Also, Nipissing offers more placement hours than any other nursing program. Practical experience is what gets you hired at the end of the day, not the name of the university.

4. Learning Style: Nipissing's program is not traditional in comparison to other university nursing programs. I love that they emphasize on self-reflection because I think that this components is often overlooked by student nurses. Self-reflection doesn't come naturally to everyone and is a skill that is essential for every nurse. So I love that they have heavily incorporated it into their program. It's definitely a skill that I want to further nurture and develop. Furthermore, after a lot of self-reflection (LOL) I have come to the conclusion that I am a self-driven learner and therefore will be a great fit for the program. My time-management skills need some work but I am hopeful that by placing myself in a learning environment that hinges on it, I will force myself to adapt/ adopt better mechanisms to improve this skill.

Obviously there are disadvantages to this program, just like any other. But, they are up to the interpretation of the individual. What works for me may not work for someone else and vice versa. I'm just happy to have been accepted as I am passionate about health and healthcare.

Also, I have been chatting with a current SPP student who has given me loads of information regarding the program structure. They helped immensely in helping me formulate my decision.

Side note: If there is anyone who would like to clarify/correct whatever I've written down, please feel free to. This is my personal thought process, and may not be applicable to everyone.

Hi! I got an offer for a spot at Nippissing today (off the waitlist). For anyone here who got a spot from the waitlist, how long did it take to show up on your OUAC and on MyNippissing. I think I'm being impatient, but I don't want to get too excited until I get the "official" acceptance letter hehe

Hey, I completely understand how you feel! I was waiting so impatiently for my offer letter ? I got off the waitlist on June 28 and received my official offer letter on July 5! The offer showed up on my OUAC on July 1 ?

Hi guys, this thread is probably dead by now haha but I'm planning to apply to Nipissing this year! Looks like there isn't a thread yet for SPP 2022. If anyone sees this, just wanted to make sure that the grades they look at are your best 20 half-credits from your entire undergrad (and not your last 2 years)? As in, 20 half-credit courses with your best grades? I'm a little confused because that seems suspiciously easy-going compared to the GPA requirements for other schools ?. I know they look at CASPer too though!

Hello! I'm wondering if any current SPP students have any helpful advice to an incoming first year SPP student ?

Hi guys!

I'm currently in Nipissing's SPP and we created a new FB group for those of you who have been offered admission to Nipissing's Scholar Practitioner Program for the Fall 2022 start cycle. We realize that this program is a little elusive in nature so please join if you have any questions.
