when you work nights which nights are considered to be the week end?As permanent night workers we consider that Friday and Saturday night are the unsociable nights of the weekend but our manager considers that Saturday and Sunday are the weekend causing confusion in the off duty because everyone has to do two weekend shifts at least during the month and he considers that Sundays count while we say they should be Friday and Saturday.

What do your fascilities, hospitals, nursing homes etc do about this?

All three I would consider part of the weekend if I was doing nights.

well our theory is that if you work friday night it pretty much wipes out your saturday and if you work saturday it wipes out your sunday but if you work sunday that wipes out monday which is not a weekend. If you only work sunday night then youve had all of friday and saturday and most of sunday off so youve had your weekend .

From your manager's point of view, the weekend days/nights are the ones he has to pay you extra/unsocial hours payments to work. Most of the night hours attracting such enhancements are on Sat. and Sun.

well that is half the problem because although the trained staff get a weekend enhancement the carers do not making it very difficult to get carers to work the weekends

Our manager counts Sunday night only if you work them together, as in Sat/Sun night. If you work a Sun/Mon that doesn't count. We must work 3 weekend shifts per 4 week period so if you work a Friday night alone, then pick up a Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun that qualifies you.

thats pretty much what we do,the carers who work two nights have to do a Fri/sat a month and the ones who work three nights a week do a Fri/sat/sun a month but quite a few of them do a lot of Sundays in the month but they still have to do a Fri/sat,they cant just do Sundays as their weekend quota.

The problem arose when our manager, who is very day orientated, gave someone from days who was changing onto nights all Sundays to work with no Fri/Sat's,this caused a lot of grumbling among the rest of the carers.

Ah the joys of working out the off duty!

I've never thought about what happens if you finish the night shifts on a Friday night/Sat morning, must ask the rota guy ;)

We work 5 12 hour night shifts a month and two weekends, usually, the night shifts will go over a weekend, since that is when agency are more expensive!

I'll update you on the theory when I've spoken to our rota coordinator, interesting subject!

Because we work permanent nights we feel that the pay on special holidays should reflect this but the special rates,ie.time and a half ,double time etc go from midnight to midnight so that if you work say Christmas day from 21.00 you only get 3 hours double time and 8 hours time and a half.As you are probably missing out half of your Christmas day due to trying to sleep etc it would be nice to be compensated by 11 hours double time! The same thing happens at weekends the weekend rate does not start until saturday 0800 so therefore fri.day is not classed as weekend even though your going to sleep half of saturday.

Nightmare,

I agree the system of pay for night shifts is mad! I'm not sure when our weekend rate kicks in, but I have been known to put four hours on the friday shift and try to put the rest on the Saturday rate when I'm filling out my extra duty... the gobbldygook that is a payslip means I can't really be sure which I'm being paid for ;)

Our dept also classes the day you finish nights as a rest day, I'm sure its the same in many places... so you sleep the majority of that day and then only have one day to adjust before finding yourself back on days, joy!

Permanent nights have been stopped for our staff since it is apparently "unfair" on the rest of the staff.

I used to work regular nights plus when I did internal rotation we started monday night to the following monday morning. Loved that cos then had a week off, we did 75 hours in 7 days. Never lost out on weekends rates. At the 3 hospitals I worked at unsociable rates started at 8pm mon-thur, weekend rate started 8pm friday til sunday morning then went onto another rate for sundays and at midnight sunday went back to the other rate.

When and what you get paid should be in your Contract of Employment ?

If you start a shift on a Friday night and that is say a Bank Holiday, then ALL of the hours that are worked throughout that shift should be paid at the appropriate rate, say double time. The employer should not be paying different rates until you have finished your shift. Then a normal rate would apply.

Seems like your employers are taking liberties here, unless of course it is stipulated in your Contract. Get a copy and then you will know what is what !!
