NHRMC

Published

I am from the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) area & have been considering moving to Wilmington for some time now. Does anyone reading this post work @ New Hanover? Do you know much about it? Is it a place you would recommend? Anything you may know would help !

Thank you in advance for your valuable time & input!!!

I have been to wilmington a few times, and am considering applying there as well. However I am in Goldsboro, near Raleigh. I am also looking forward to any information anyone may have on this hospital/facility and also cost of living and information about schools as my children are in middle and high school. Any departments within the hospital to stay away from if offered a job? Which departments have good managers? Thanks..

I moved from the Triad to Wilmington 5 years ago. During my 20+ years there, I worked at both Wesley Long and at Cone. When I moved to Wilmington I worked on a surgical/urology floor at NHRMC for 2 years. It does not begin to measure up to either WL or Cone in terms of quality of care or support of the nursing staff. There is a lot of turnover with some floors being staffed almost entirely by new grads. Administration does not back up their nurses. I know of two mature, experienced nurses who were forced to resign because of a patient complaint and one 30 year nurse who was forced to retire because her new manager didn't like her attitude! Don't know how salaries compare now, but NH pay was less than the Triad 5 years ago. I seriously do not recommend this hospital as a good workplace. I have heard that those working at Cape Fear Hosp (which is owned by NH) are happier than those at the NH campus.

The Wilmington area is nice, especially proximity to the beaches and the beautiful historic downtown area. Housing is more expensive here than in the Triad. Many people settle in the adjacent counties of Brunswick and Pender, which are less expensive than New Hanover. I don't know much about the schools as my children are adults and my grandchildren are in preschool and in first grade. The weather is great...no snow and no ice!

Hope this helps some. Will be glad to answer further questions. Good Luck with your prospective move.

I currently work at NHRMC.... pay SUCKS (about 3$ less than where I moved here from), I love the facility though. They just did a huge renovation, and it is beautiful, all private rooms, ect. LOTS of new grads very few experienced nurses though. Any other questions I'd love to be of assistance!:)

As a veteran of "The Network" AKA New Hanover Regional Medical Center , I can substantiate the above posts describing the terrible work situation at New Hanover. It is a given that longevity is frowned upon as they do not desire to pay for it. Most unit managers are travelers who are there to keep the ship running and move on as quickly as possible. Think things are different at Cape Fear? Not a chance as it is run by the same management team. Ditto for Pender Memorial and Dosher as they are in the Net work.

Wilmington is a beautiful historic town with a host of amenities. It is a shame and a blight that one of the county's largest employers is non supportive of their staff. May I suggest:

Brunswick Community Hospital

Brunswick Community Hospital or

Wilmington Surg Care about - Surgcare of Wilmington

New Hanover Health Department Home

NC DOC: Employment at the North Carolina Department of Correction

There is always the jobs posting in the local news paper: Wilmington NC news, sports, weather, Wilmington film news, homes | StarNewsOnline.com | Wilmington Star News that include local Home Health, Doctor's office and free standing urgent care openings .

I was one of the lucky ones that got away, found a good position with an company that is fair and pays well. We have zero turnover. That speaks for itself.

I hope this helps.

I've heard this alot re NHRMC and it's unfortunate. from nurses to patients, it's not a well liked hospital. there is no competition in the area and Cape Fear Hospital is owned by NHRMC, so, go figure. It's a Magnet hospital and trauma 2, if I remember correctly. you would think with all of the negative that has been going on for years,....that it would have been addressed and corrected way before now. and even now, it's still "the same ole". I prefer hospital nursing and have been associated w/ hospitals w/ great reputations.., but this one...man, I just can't figure it out as to why nothing is being done.

on the other hand, wilmington is great. oh...n the beaches...ahhhhh, the beaches!

It's all about control. If you knew the core group of management , you would have your answer.

Correction they were a Magnet hospital but lost it. Perhaps for the reasons touched on in this thread. So many good nurses got a a great start at NH or CF and moved on to be appreciated elsewhere. One of the worst issues was changing their staffing productivity index to exclude the acuity of patients. In addition, all salaried (and there are too many) RN's are exempt from no only the productivity numbers, but also from being sent home for low census. Thus the worker bees are having to use PTO going home for low census while the pencil pushers get to use PTO for vacation.

Bad organization, too top heavy, not enough nurses at the bedside to deliver quality care, too many chiefs & not enough indians.

I have heard NOTHING good about CFH, and I know for a fact that the hospital that I work in takes a lot of their "mistakes". The compliance of CFH is terrible and it makes me scared for the nurses there. One of our ortho trauma docs recently got a call from one of the ortho docs at CFH wanting him to take a transfer pt because he was getting ready to go on vacation and didn't want to take this pt. REALLY dude? Wow.
