Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Moved to the NJ forum as nothing to do with taking NCLEX.

I doubt having a CA license will affect volunteering however you can not work as a RN in NJ without a NJ license

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

There are no volunteer nursing jobs in NJ without a license. Certifications in nursing specialties require a minimum of 2 years of full time experience.

Unemployment in NJ is very high especially for new and inexperienced nurses. If you graduated more than a year ago you won't be eligible for any new grad training programs.

Hospitals and other facilities won't even look at your application without an active NJ license. Most hospitals are BSN/RN preferred with 1-2 years current US experience.

Also in the aftermath of TS Sandy it is likely to take longer than 3 months for a license endorsement especially if you are an IEN.

Hospital CNAs don't require certification but LTC CNAs do. Facilities may be reluctant to hire you in an UAP (unlicensed assistance personnel) role if you are pending a RN license as the cost of training may exceed the benefit, especially since once you are licensed you are likely to abandon the position.

There is no such thing as a nurse volunteer in a hospital setting. Most hospital HR departments are off site in NJ and thus only online applications are accepted. I know some recruiters and if the website specifically states online applications only, like Meridian and Barnabas Health, you will get nowhere trying to apply in person and may get your file flagged for failing to follow directions.

Basically the answer is hurry up and wait you are likely not getting a response from online applications since you are not licensed in NJ. There are many currently licensed applicants that will be prioritized. You can ensure that your AHA basic life support/CPR for the healthcare professional card is current. You can consider taking ACLS and/or PALS courses and working on your résumé while waiting for your license.

o yes . you r right. very usefull information. thanks

Endorsing the CA license into NJ would still have to pass NJ's educational requirements as well as any required English proficiency exams.

hey steppybay..is it confirmed about english test...or whether i should conatct to board to make sure...

If it says so under the NJ BON requirements for endorsement, then yes, but yes if you can call them and get thru, try it or e-mail them directly, good luck!

Every state has their own particular requirements. If they see that the educational transripts are out of state or out of the country, they could ask for more documentation, such as passports, green card information, etc. This could be a trigger point to request for more testings, not sure.

Keep us posted, as I know of a few friends from the Phils of doing the same process, but from different states.

I know that we have all worked hard to become nurses, but in the present job market we need to get our foot in the door of a hospital.

Volunteer at a hospital in any position that you can find or get a job in patient care or a clerical area. then begin applying for nursing jobs as an internal applicant. I have seen this approach work for several foreign educated nurses. In addition, you will be able to have an inside view into the organization.

However, as I posted previously there is no such thing as a volunteer nurse in a hospital in NJ, it is not permitted per insurance regulations and state regulations. There are significant liability issues, and more so if the facility is unionized. A nurse who happens to be a hospital volunteer would not be permitted to work in a clinical role, the job is working in a gift shop or the information desk. While other countries permit nurses to serve in a volunteer clinical position in a healthcare facility it is simply not viable option in the US.
