Newman University DNAP CRNA 2024

Nursing Students SRNA

Good luck to everyone applying to Newman University's DNAP 2024 cohort! In the words of CRNA Jon Lowrance (Anesthesia Guidebook podcast), competition among applicants ends once CRNA school begins. To help cultivate this mindset, this forum is for applicants to share tips and pearls they've found along the way for preparing for the highly anticipated interview!

I'm reading "Thinking, Fast and Slow," "Make it Stick, the Science of Successful Learning," and "Costanzo's Physiology" to prep! Podcasts like "Anesthesia Guidebook," "Core Anesthesia," and "ACCRAC" have been helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect for both the interview and understanding the stress of CRNA school!

What have you found helpful? What pitfalls do you anticipate? What did you most enjoy from your shadowing experience?

One of my CRNA mentors generously gave me a mock interview. Some of the topics I hadn't expected are below!

- If a patient asks your opinion of a surgeon you don't believe is safe or good, how do you answer the patient?

- if you are passionate about supporting a cause or giving back to your community, make sure that comes out in the interview.

- have a specific patient in mind when asked to describe your favorite population to work with. Use your experience with that patient to guide the interview panel through how you managed various pathologies and challenges.

- be aware of the driving forces behind anesthesia provider politics. Who is pushing for AA's and why? Why is independent CRNA practice important?

- what setting (rural vs urban, hospital vs surgery center, independent vs mixed) do you picture yourself working in when you complete your CRNA program?

- if you aren't admitted to the program this cohort, what is your next step?

How do you prepare for doing some of the hardest things you will have to do in CRNA school? How is your mindset going in to high stress situations and building on your experience of previous hard situations? Below is an episode from The Emergency Mind podcast on learning and teaching for unscripted difficult situations when the progression of reality diverges from the expected outcome.

CRNA school, like many of our various journeys, will come with its dose of imposter syndrome. How well prepared are you to cope with this challenge? How is humility different from imposter syndrome? How can you change your mindset now to be more resilient against feeling like you are undeserving of this opportunity? Below is an episode on overcoming imposter syndrome. It's intended for medical students but easily translates to SRNA's!

I too have recently submitted my application. I wish everyone good luck on this portion of their nursing journey.

In talking to one of my CRNA mentors this past week, the conversation turned to gratitude. In your interview, acknowledging those who helped blaze your trail to arriving where you are now helps to show that your gratitude to other leaders and mentors is part of what drives your pursuit of excellence. Showing gratitude to your interview panel afterwards with a brief thank you note (even if you feel like they were trying to beat you down during the interview) goes a long way as well!

As my mentor said: "never forget the shoulders you climbed on to get where you are and always try to find ways to pay it forward.”

Just finished "Watchful Care"  - strongly recommend if you haven't already read it. Great insight into the development of CRNA as a specialty and the issues that have and continue to challenge the profession. I was concerned about the overt bias against physician anesthesiologists and the ASA, but overall very informative.

Excellent discussion on the concept of agency, internal rules, and the "line in the sand" of moral injury in burnout. "Should", "must", and "won't" take on new identities when considered in the context of burnout for practicing and training clinicians. How are you prepared for combating burnout during CRNA school?

Last year's cohort started getting emails the last week of October - I get a run of sinus tach whenever I open my email regardless though!
