Newman University DNAP CRNA 2024

Published

Good luck to everyone applying to Newman University's DNAP 2024 cohort! In the words of CRNA Jon Lowrance (Anesthesia Guidebook podcast), competition among applicants ends once CRNA school begins. To help cultivate this mindset, this forum is for applicants to share tips and pearls they've found along the way for preparing for the highly anticipated interview!

I'm reading "Thinking, Fast and Slow," "Make it Stick, the Science of Successful Learning," and "Costanzo's Physiology" to prep! Podcasts like "Anesthesia Guidebook," "Core Anesthesia," and "ACCRAC" have been helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect for both the interview and understanding the stress of CRNA school!

What have you found helpful? What pitfalls do you anticipate? What did you most enjoy from your shadowing experience?

Thank you for the reply CamillusRN. I had the entirety of my application heavily critiqued as well, on multiple platforms and with previously accepted SRNAs.

When I do receive my no-interview email, I will request an application review as well. That is a good idea. I'm trying to remain hopeful and keep pushing forward in this process. I really believe feedback from the program will be instrumental in learning more about what I can do to become a more competitive candidate moving forward.

I asked the program for any feedback when I got my email as they have a 2 application limit. So far I've heard crickets from that request.

Those of you who have heard back with a "no interview" email, did admissions give you feedback?

Those of you who did get a spot, congratulations! If you are open to it, I would love to know your experience (ICU specialty, years of experience), GPA stats, and anything extra you did that helped you stand out as an applicant!

I haven't heard back one way or another but I'm assuming I didn't get an interview and also got lost in the process of "no interview" emails. I just want to continue bettering myself for CRNA school and the application/interview process in general.

I'm currently an acute care NP working on a rapid response/code team. My undergrad GPA was 3.6ish but my grad school was a 3.9. I've got 10 years total of nursing experience. 6 years of ICU as a RN and 3 as a AGACNP.

That is amazing experience Jennifer! Thank you for sharing!

Unfortunately I'm not surprised based on what I gather from the Newman alumni I work with. I'm not holding my breath for a review to be honest due to the program's current challenges.

What kind of current challenges? Just wanting my eyes wide open going into everything.

I got my rejection letter from Newman when others posted they got one as well. This is my second time applying to Newman and I think this whole faculty change and restructuring was the reason I wasn't given an opportunity to interview. I spoke with the previous director and followed up with her on how to strengthen my application and I took all the recommended classes she mentioned. This application period had no clue who the faculty was and felt like they looked at my cumulative GPA and didn't look at the rest of my application.

Thankfully I applied to 7 schools this round, landed interviews for 2 of them, and offered and took a spot during the interview for National University. While I'm disappointed that Newman again didn't give me an opportunity to interview and show them who I am, I think there's reasons for everything. This "restructuring" and possible accreditation issues could be the universe telling me this school wasn't for me!

Good luck everyone, my best advice is to not give up!

I'm in a similar boat as you. Didn't get an interview at Newman but now I'm thinking that was a blessing in disguise with all the staff changes and potential accreditation issues. I applied to 4 schools total, 3 interviews, 2 acceptances so far (Tulsa was my third interview and I haven't heard back yet), 1 of those acceptances was on the spot. I am happy to be attending Union University in Jackson, TN.
