Newbie heading for AZ (hopefully)

Published

Hi everyone

After many trips to AZ we have decided that is where we want to be and of course hubby is quite happy that I am the one to have to get the visa! Stupidly thought that I 'just' get through the NCLEX and apply for a green card:nono: realised I was wrong - duh! Anyone else been able to get a green card from working in the community- emailed an agency the other day and they said I need to be working full-time on a med/surg ward so am now frantically job hunting in a zero job availability climate for something! I work part-time and really do not want to work full time if I don't have to- I had planned to do less hours to free up some time while I study and sort out for emigrating:o

Specializes in theatre, elderly, community, ICU.

I did the online Kaplan course and found it very good. Convinced I wouldn't have pased without it

Specializes in ITU, Surg, District & School Nurse.

Have you actually applied to AZ BON and received approval to sit for the NCLEX exam? You must have approval from a state BON to be able to sit for that exam, and it is the final step in the licensing process, not the only one.

Specializes in ITU, Surg, District & School Nurse.

If you mean CES then yes I have started the process, if there is something else I should know that I am supposed to do then no:uhoh21:

Thought I would use the time to start preparing for the NCLEX - it's a L O N G time since I sat my finals LOL

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

as well as organising CES have you applied to Florida board of nursing and starting your application there? They will be the ones who give you the OK to sit the exam

I worked as a Health Visitor and came here three years ago with OGP they stipulated I had to get some more recent hospital experience after I passed the NCLEX,( I had done surgery for a lot of years before going into health visiting) I did a very small amount for a couple of months before I came out but honestly even though you may have to do some to satisfy your company, its so different when you get here my 'refresher' didn't help at all.

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

Yes I have to agree with Georgiegirl the nursing you bring from the UK is so different you dont need to be current to practice here cause they do things so different it is actually easier to fit in to learn the American way by not comparing cause it drives you crazy.

Specializes in ITU, Surg, District & School Nurse.

I got a bank job in a BUPA hospital to update med/surg:balloons: I am just wading through the formalities so that I can get started. I am so pleased especially with how difficult jobs are right now- they asked lots of questions about machines I have used, pathways etc. because I was coming from the community. I have already updated my resume;) Fingers crossed with my transcripts, I spoke to the uni where my school of nursing eventually ended up- they only archive 10 years so no transcripts- NMC are looking into it for me:uhoh21:

Ok now for the part I am confused wth- according to AZ Bon they recommend waiting until I have CES report to apply- did you guys apply before that???? All help appreciated:smilecoffeecup:
