from New Zealand Nurses

Published

hi. i am currently in touch with counties manukau district health board in auckland new zealand, due to my application with them. they have conducted an interview here in the philippines, i was shortlisted and successful with the interview. now i'm working on my registration with the nursing council. however, i have heard some negative feedbacks regarding manukau (where cmdhb is based). is it really that bad in manukau? are there any positive comments about it? thanks for the info that you will be posting to this thread.

I am a Registered Nurse and live in New Zealand. I have let my registration expire here. It is a horrible place to work on so many levels. I have worked in Australia and really enjoyed it. Money is better, more time off and much stronger leadership.

The cost of living and taxes are high and a house in Auckland is out of reach for many. Do not make the mistake of believing the advertising about NZ as NZ makes tons of money from immigrants and a large percentage of them leave with close to empty pockets. Do your research and visit first and look what is really on offer. AS others have said, there is a reason why most NZ nurses work in other countries or other professions.

one thing i dont know, hope you could help.... if you would advise a new nurse or if you would have a choice, which nursing specialization is "better" in terms of work schedule, workload, stress: ICU Nurse or Renal Dialysis Nurse? Ive heard stories that if you have the chance, better become a renal dialysis nurse? they said the work sched is better (no night shift), the task is routinary which means the "risk" or "error" or "environment" is much more manageable than other nursing specialties....

thank you..

Don't go to NZ - Australia is much better.

The best thing about working in NZ is job security.

In my experience the negative aspects were:

-No respect for education. There seems to be an anti-professional type that is quite common. These nurses get promoted, even nurse managers have no proper qualifications. They, in turn, promote like minded charge nurses. There is an attitude that is very narrow, they have no idea how much they don't know - they, of course think they know everything - and will even tell you.

-Bully culture. You will be picked on for being different - particularly if you try not to be a narrow thinking type. They are often unware that they bully - so ingrained is the tall poppy syndrome.

Please think again, Australia is the better choice. I left NZ and am so much happier in Australia

Hi rupie thanks for ur post

Well each one has his own experience and most often, the bad ones put our spirits down. And I could understand that. I respect each individual'sopinion and it is good to hear from u who share their work conditions.

From reading most of the threads in Australia, NZ and other nurses overseas, it seems to me that nursing experiences are relative :wink2:. I agree that money in OZ is better compared to NZ, but hey, nurses and doctors here too are overworked too. I am currently working in a nursing home and in a public hospital. I observed how nurses do their duties and express how tired they are at end of shift and how crappy their shift was....sometimes they have to stay longer to cover someone else shift..(reason: not really sure).

Hi there. I am currently working in auckland as a staff nurse and been living in auckland for 6 years. I came from the same country as you do and my advise to you is to grab the opportunity. We are in a recession right now and you are lucky to be shortlisted. Manukau hosp is a public hosp and pays good money too. About the not so good news you here about the place i would say that you can always choose not to live in manukau or in the southern portion of auckland. There's more news on robbery and street fighting in that area but there will always be same problems anywhere else in the country. I honestly think that you grab that opportunity and if you dont like it, you can always apply to other hosps once your contract finishes. It is true that nurses from here goes to australia bec of better pay. However life here in NZ is very relaxed and working conditions is very accommodating. Most of the people here are friendly. I hope this gives you some light.

hi, there. i'm a nurse from manila, phils. can anyone give me an idea what is the salary scale of nurses in the NZ? the nursing council recently approved my registration so the next step is for me to process my visa. i'm going to sit on the CAP starting may 25 '09 so i'm off to NZ before that. i am quite confused actually because i also have an approved application in the UK (NVQ 3-4). on the plus side, NZ looks good when i see it on a long term basis, because of the work permit that you hold once the CAP is done. UK's NVQ ties you down to a 2-year student visa.

i will appreciate any of your opinion on the working perks of both UK and NZ...

thanks so much!

I agree with ya. Many people complain of having nil job when the job is there for a grab. We are hard working Filipinos. I am a new grad so i want to explore nursing areas and have an adventure as well. I am in New Zealand now, cold but no worries coz i originally came from my home town that is also cold...northern Phil so to say. xx Cheers and good luck fellow nurses.
