from New Zealand Nurses

hi. i am currently in touch with counties manukau district health board in auckland new zealand, due to my application with them. they have conducted an interview here in the philippines, i was shortlisted and successful with the interview. now i'm working on my registration with the nursing council. however, i have heard some negative feedbacks regarding manukau (where cmdhb is based). is it really that bad in manukau? are there any positive comments about it? thanks for the info that you will be posting to this thread.

HI, I dont live in Auckland but spend most weekends there. Of late South Auckland (Which is where Manukau is situated) has had many violent crimes. To be honest I doubt it is as bad as it seems and it is more street fighting. I wouldnt let any negative news stop you, and it is certainly not the worst place in NZ just the most news worthy at present. Yes there are many positives. The way I see it, depending on ur contract, you should take the opportunity and if you decide you do not like it there will be many many many places that will employ you due to a huge nursing shortage here. I am only in my first year of my nursing degree. Good luck and all the best with your future.

count your blessings... many esp. 2nd courser nurses could not work in new zealand.. they would gladly take your place if only they could.

Yes I agree with cioman94. Dont listento what others are saying go for your dreams. Since responding to your post I have talked to many other NZnders and they all say the same thing.. "You will get good and bad in every place, South Auckland is not that bad really" Dont be put off... I say go-for-it!! And will be happy to stay in touch. I only live 2.5 hours south of Manakau. All the best!!

Thanks guys... I really appreciate the boost... I will pursue this, and I will be in NZ in no time. Thanks a lot. I hope people can tell me stories about NZ, just to give me an idea of what I am up against to.

hi there.i'm new in this website and so happen to come across your thread. How are things going on with you in New Zealand.?Hope things are doing well with your move.

i'm a ccu nurse from england and recently moved here in vancouver with my husband (ICU nurse) nearly 3 months ago. I'm enjoying my job in here, but there's a few issues that my husband and I are not happy about in here.We say we will give it a year and see how we go but we are also thinking of moving over there in New Zealand.

Hope you're settling in well and hope to find out more about NZ from a new comer like you in case we decide to move. All the best, kabayan!

better research deeply regarding nursing in New Zealand (besides getting opinion from us, check all other websites etc. etc.)... there are things that you should and must know about New Zealand before you make a decision.. im not saying anything bad about NZ, but you have a different case than ours.. just to tickle your mind: one of the reasons that there is a nursing shortage in NZ is because NZ nurses migrate to UK or Australia... Im here in the Philippines, if ive to choose, without blinking an eye I'll choose Canada or Australia over NZ (unless im a moron).. so weigh things out and research, research, research..

hi again cioman94..thank u for the advise..just curious, did u ever work in nz or still waiting to go...yeah, you are right, heard form a nz colleague of mine here in canada that their nurses move to aussie because their nurses are underpaid and the cost of living is high..which makes us think also...some places could be a bit remote as well which means public transport could be a hassle..But my husband and I are looking for a change, a more laid back life style with our two young kids...enough space for them to play and taking a walk to the beach during our days off, those kind of stuff....we will be exploring BC though before we decide again for the big move...at the moment, as I said i'm enjoying my job here in Vancouver, its just "too city" for us...will check out the island (Victoria) and hope we find our little haven their with our kids...

Hope all goes well with you...If u are still in the Phis. i heard from my UK friends that they are open again with foreign nurses, so check it out...O'grady Peyton is our international agency, office somewhere in Makati (cant remember exactly where)...all the best and thank you again....

thanks for the info... got your point, yep family environment which is indeed vital.. anyways, im sure you can find many options there in canada.. indeed 200% i agree NZ is a nice place esp for raising a family.. but it is really a different story if you're working as a nurse there.. but for a starter like me, NZ is okey, but for well experienced like you, better use your edge and leverage, take your time and make decisions wisely..

good luck..

hello,

i may not know everything, but i would bet my money in giving an advice for you not to work there as a nurse, particularly that you are already there in australia.. basic issue: the salary, in itself you can see the big difference.. the weather... if you are not a nurse (banker, engineer), then NZ is heaven really..

i know that you heard complains about nursing in australia, but actually in every corner of the world you would hear that, it really just boils down which place is bad, worse and worst for nurses.. i prefer the "bad" so to speak, and that would include west coast of USA, Canada, and Australia..
