[snip laudatory BS]

"Meet Penelope," Dr. Treat said, motioning toward a robotic arm poised over a set of surgical tools. "She is one hot little number."

And Penelope is looking for a job.

She is meant to replace the scrub nurse, the person in the operating room who hands the surgeon the tools of surgery. Responding to the ever-widening shortage of nurses in the country, and looking to deal with a problem that frustrated him as a working surgeon, Dr. Treat and his team of tech whizzes are working feverishly to get Penelope ready for her public debut.

New York-Presbyterian Hospital has agreed to test Penelope in March in the operating room on a simple removal of a benign cyst. If all goes well, Dr. Treat dreams of putting a Penelope in every hospital across the country.

"The robot should be able to do everything a nurse can," Dr. Treat said

[snip]

Typically, there are now two human nurses in the operating room, the circulating nurse and the scrub nurse, Dr. Treat said. The circulating nurse can move about the room, but the scrub nurse does not move from the surgeon's shoulder. She is there to do one thing: Get the doctor's tools.

[snip]

"There to do one thing?"

"Do everything a nurse can?"

"Replace the scrub nurse?"

Letters to the editor, anyone?

Granted, this is neat technology, but would you want Penelope scrubbing on your loved one's operation? I think not! It's inventor and the author of this article seem to lack any clue at all about what the role of a nurse in the O.R. is. It's offensive.

Can the robot retract/suction/etc?

Can the robot react to different stimuli in the environment to see what is going on and anticipate the surgeon's needs?

Can the robot "give me what I need, not what I ask for?"

Can the robot ...

You get the picture.

dont worry guys, the next thing they will do is to create SAMSON, to do all the surgeries in the OR. just breaking the ice.

And next comes the robot MD.

Studies show that some alarming percentage of people get their health information from daytime TV. Yeah. I'd say it falls on us to get the word out.

However, I'd argue that *SCIENCE REPORTERS* are obliged to have some vestige of a clue regarding things like this.

Or do scrubbing robots just sell newspapers?

That's true, but whose fault is it that reporters--part of the general public--does not know what we do?

We really have to take the bull by horns and get the word out, don't we? 'Cause if we let them draw their own conclusions........well, they'll hurt themselves or something.

Well, we have nurse-educators, parish nurses, legal nurses....why NOT science-reporter nurses? We ARE qualified to talk about health issues, after all, and in some cases, we're MORE qualified than the physician.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go. That ought to knock them docs right off the old pedestel!! :rotfl:

Know what else I thought of? If robots replace the scrubs, who will the flaming nasty surgeons have to yell at? Maybe they will rethink the increase in technology!

I would be scared of a robot in there. I would be scared of the Doc yelling at the robot in there...thats just asking for trouble.

Seriously the nurseadvocacy article was great.

Would nurse-bots give up their chairs for docs at the nsg station? Make coffee?

"Meet Penelope," She is meant to replace the scrub nurse. The robot should be able to do everything a nurse can. The scrub nurse does not move from the surgeon's shoulder. She is there to do one thing: Get the doctor's tools. This is not so true!!!! :( If that is the case then that is something anyone can do. I've worked in the OR before and has been a scrub nurse as well as circulating nurse many times. This article is very offensive and giving out misconception about OR nurses. Inventing a robot sounds really cool. But to replace a human nurse with the robot???? in the OR????? :rotfl: I wonder what the doctors would do if the robot gives them the wrong tools? Are they going to yell at them too? Are they going to throw the tools out of frustration? BOINK!!!! "HI I'M PENELOPE. THE TOOLS FELL. OH, HERE YOU GO DOC!" I don't think this is a good solution to nurses shortage. It sounds cool, but ridiculous! A robot is only a machine which can make more mistakes than humans. And I bet it would be more costly in the patient's part.

Edited to add: no matter "how much technological advance we make with machines to monitor patients, machines can't do the loving, nurturing care that a nurse can do, can't have the judgment, can't have the wisdom and can't be replaced by machines." ------ Dr. Phil well said.

Good article in the advocacy link.

So, this whizbang little surgeon thinks Penelope is a "hot little number", huh? Does he need a robot because the nurses won't work with someone who thinks they should be hot little numbers too? :rotfl:

Heck when I am on that table I want a nurse there to watch my vitals my color to wake me up To do my vitals Run and get help and do CPR If a nurse hadn't been there in recovery I would have lost my life . Wasn't coming out well

I see alot more Malpratice with this for sure. I WANT MY NURSE! :angryfire
