Nurses General Nursing

Published

hi! i've been reading here for quite some time but was not a member. i've been an rn for almost two years now and today was the first time a doctor upset me enough to bring tears to my eyes. i decided that it was time for some nursing companionship. of course, i can tell my finance, but he doesn't really understand like another nurse would.

so, anyway, to my day, first my one patient takes duonebs at home, but did not have them ordered postop and he was requesting one. i page the md. he calls me back and says this better be important 'cause i'm in a conference right now. what does he think i'm calling him just to talk? trust me he's not that fun to talk to.

then, another patient was on sips of cl after major abdominal surgery with an ng to lcs, hypoactive bs, and no flatus. he's going on and on about wanting to advance his diet. of course i teach him about why that can't happen, but all he says over and over is that he wants to talk to his doctor. so i page the md and transfer him in the room. after they talk the doc askes for me and is all upset because he was paged for a silly reason, like his patient wants to talk to him. then he wanted to talk to the charge nurse. i was upset and mad and i still think that i did the right thing. it brought tears to my eyes which is not something that i do easily. what do you guys think? what would you have done in that situation? and nice to meet you all.

For an easy way out, I would probably call the M.D. and document it in the nurses notes...

However, ladies and gentlemen, we the nurses spend 24 hours a day with our patients and the doctor only spend a few minutes with our patients....and we are the ones to report to the M.D. when the patient's conditions have changed. So...why our patients just want to talk to the doctors and not the nurses.

I have seen a nurse giving the KCL to the patient and asked the patient to take it because this was what your doctor ordered it for you...if the patient had any questions regarding to KCL , then the patient should ask his/her doctor about it....

I am not afraid to agitate my doctors should there is a need to call the doctor...however, in this case, the accomplishment is not there....

I always work very hard to gain the trust from my patients...I always make sure call bell will be handled right away...a cup of ice chips will be there even I have more than 10 patients that are under my care....I might ask the CNA/PCA to do it...but I don't want my patients to wait 10 to 15 minutes for that....when you work hard, most patients would be appreciated....and once they trust you, your work will be easier....

I just have one thing to say about these docs.......It's Their Job!!!!!!!! Do they forget this???? Honestly :angryfire ..Ya I bet you sit around all shift with your feet up deciding when a good time to call the doc & interrupt him is because he is "so busy" .......I would simply state to the doc from now on in this type of issue " it's your job"......end of story.......Tell them to both put rubber bands around their heads & snap out of it!! lol:lol2:

Big Hug!!! It's all good!

Now I need to start back being the prayer warrior that I use to be. I will not make it 60 seconds in the nursing field if a doc is that rude to me. I am a student now so it is best that I get my pray on before I start clinicals.Help me Lord!!!
