New students

What are you or have you done that was a success to prepare for school? School starts August 5th for me!

Well, I am just starting as a nursing student, but here is what I'm doing:

1) Working on the list of medical terms provided to me by the school's directors. (Need to do better on this!)

2) Getting other things in life organized/cleared, so that I can be very time-efficient while in school. I'm talking about spring cleaning, kitchen organization, birthday cards bought ahead, etc.

3) Getting my nutritional status in order. (Actually, I have many reasons to do this, and didn't consider nursing school prep one of them, until I realized that some fogginess I was experiencing has disappeared since I've gotten off Diet coke.)

:)

Are you reading ahead and how does your program work?

I can't read ahead, because I don't have text books or program materials yet, but I keep promising myself I am going to watch YouTube videos on general subjects touched on in my Medical Terminology class (a course prerequisite), like: "How the cardiovascular system works"; "The Integumentary System"; "Pharmacology for Nurses": and so on...

I'm not sure what you mean by "how does your program work"...?

Specializes in Hospice.

Our orientation is August 12 and we have alot to do before then as far as vaccinations, health exams, drug tests, etc. I also bought my Fundamentals book so I could read ahead, although we weren't told to do that, YET. Also organizing and prettying up my study room since I will be spending so much time there.

Like my program is a new semester every 3 months and its a private college.

Good luck with everything!

Some advice to new students are: read ahead on A&P and medical terminology, organize your life as far as time management, job hours, study time, if you have kids have a few backup plans, eat healthy, and good luck :)

How did you work did u do full time?

Specializes in Pediatrics, Emergency, Trauma.

Since you may not have your books available, getting household activities straight, plans for life/school balance-which includes nutrition. Learning about how to study in nursing school is a good start as well. Check out you tube for nursing fundamentals if you want some form of an idea, however, once you experience that first day, you will learn how to further plan your success when they go over your classes. No nursing school is the same, but you will get to the destination. Good luck!

I just finished my Nursing Fundamental class. It started on May 28 and ended June 28. And we will start again in august for Med surgical 1/clinical and health promotion. I definitely agree with organizing your study area, cleaning, and more. I plan on doing that and reading some books on nursing test strategies now that I know how the tests are formulated. Good luck to us all!

Congrats on starting school! I am set to graduate this Dec. with my ADN. Nursing school is tough..mostly because so much of your life has to be devoted to it. Get organized. Buy binders, notecards, highlighters, a drug book, a watch with a second hand, a stethoscope, and lots of printer ink. Get a calendar to visualize when tests and papers are due. Forewarn your friends and family that you have to focus on school which may not mean much time for them. Enjoy your time till school starts! Not to freak you out, but nursing school gets incredibly stressful. It is meant to weed out the people that aren't 100% devoted. Be prepared to see a lot of your peers fail or drop out. My class started with 150 students and is now down to 40 going into our final semester. Work hard, keep your blinders up and worry about yourself. Start practicing head to toe assessments and learn how to take a good manual BP to be ahead of the game before your semester starts! Good luck!!!!
