Hi everyone!! I just accepted a job as a school nurse in a middle school of about 900 kids. I'm really excited to work in this type of setting but I'm also very nervous that I'll panic over emergent situations like asthma attacks, seizures, etc. Is there any advice you guys could give?

Why do you feel you would panic? There should be a medical directors orders for these and other medical emergencies as well as individual health plans for medically fragile students. There are also multiple web site that review these medical conditions and how to stay safe in schools. Watch some training videos and review the policies and procedures of the district. Meet with individual families of the students to better understand their specific needs if they present with uncommon conditions.

Please enter new school nurse in the search bar. You're going to do just fine and there's already a wealth of information about this topic. School nursing is an adjustment to an almost wholly independent practice but your nursing spidey senses do kick in.

You know what? You will panic for a second. It's daunting being the only medical person in the building. But then, all of a sudden, your training will kick in. You'll be good.
My adrenaline always makes me so shaky!

Know those action plans, know what to do, run through scenarios, have things organized so you can grab and go in an emergency. If you are prepared everything will be alright. I'm a pretty anxious person, but somehow whenever there's an emergency I switch into action mode and make it happen. You will too. And if it's too big for you to deal with that's what EMS is for!
