New RN question

here's the situation. i was just hired as a new grad at a place i will be proud to work for. the problem. i will not be able to start orientation until july 23. my question is do i try to find something temporary to do nurse wise until i start? my thinking is by the time i get in somewhere do the required new hire things and orient it will be time for me to start my job at the hospital. is this worth the hassel or what?

You're talking a month. Four weeks. No one in their right mind would hire someone and go through the time and expense of orienting them, only to lose them just as they would become useful. In fact, you're likely to run into the same kind of delay you're looking at with this job.

My advice? Enjoy the time off. If you've just finished school, chances are you need to get reacqauinted with your family. And you've probably got a long list of "Things I Intend to Do When I Finish Nursing School."

Use the next month to decompress, get organized, spend time with your loved ones, and just HAVE FUN.

P.S. If you haven't yet passed NCLEX, do study, but balance brain time with lots of other less demanding activities.

Rediscover real life. Who knows when you'll ever have an opportunity like this again.

I agree with rn/writer. Is there something else the hospital can let you do? Get started on some education? Do some CNA type work? Why such a long wait?

The most I might try and do would maybe get a sitter job and just sit with patients. It would be a little money and let you watch stuff that goes on. You can't do anything nursing with this job though.

I'm with rn/writer. It's not a long time and there are a million things you could do with that time, like get a pedicure, or walk on the beach, or go to a movie. You're going to be overloaded and tired once you start your new job, so take advantage of the downtime!

I think doing so would only burn bridges that you may need later.
