Hi dear Suzanne
Yesterday I heard the new rule, the nurse-patient ratio 5:1, and in CA every hospital has almost 35 vacancies. Due to shortage, some hospitals increased the wage (I read about a hospital in OCALA) so I think there should be more chances for us( I mean the international nurses) , don't you think so? is thereany newsabout hiring more foreign nurses ?

This ratio has actually been around, it is not brand new. There were some court issues that came up around it with the Governor, but the RNs won. And quite a few of the better facilities were actually following it, maybe not 100%, but extremely close to it.
A foreign nurse still has to go thru the immigration process, so things are not just going to open up immediately, plus not that many hospitals do direct sponsorship of nurses here. On average, it takesa bout one year for the process here, staffing needs with facilities change.
Take the one year, plus the three months of orientation until the nurse figures in the count.
There are also quite a few American trained nurses that are graduating and moving to CA also. It is going to depend on how well that a nurse can market themselves. Simple as that.

Just wonder 5 TO 1 is day shift ratio or all-day ratio..
In Georgia, in the hospital where I work, we have 6 and rarely 7 patient per nurse for day, and 6-7 or occasionally 8-9 patient per nurse at night...
Moreover, there is only ONE nursing assistant for the whole floor.
I work night shift.. I know there are less things to do at night but extra patients and lack of nursing assistant will make up for the lower workload.. It is up to the point that some days I don't even want to go to work. Not becuase I don't like what I do.. but the workload disappointed me and consequently affect patient care as well.. I just can do as much as I can
It would be great if we can have 5:1 ratio like in California..

Is there any other state that has a ruling limiting the patient to nurse ratio at 5:1 like CA?
