Mugwump had a great idea offering services to new grads as a mentor (thank you for that!)
So, I thought having a "sticky" for new grads, OB nurses, students, and others with questions who want to post these can do so here. We also seem to see many of the same questions over and over, so perhaps this would help serve as an ongoing discussion of common issues/questions we all seem to have on our minds. This could serve not just for those asking directly, but others who may be "lurking" and looking for information or considering a career in OB, newborn, GYN nursing, or midwifery, doula services, childbirth education, lactation consulting, or other related work.
So if any mod thinks this is a good idea, mind stickying this?
Let's give this a go and see how it works out. We have many potential "mentors" here among us who, I am sure, would LOVE to help a new nurse/midwife/doula or student on his or her way to a rewarding career. I know I would love to help out!
I know the feeling. But you just remember, you can have support and camaraderie here. You are in the midst of a huge transition from student to nurse. Don't underestimate how difficult it can be; turn to us if you need anything at all. Don't forget the "First Year Nursing" forum, either. Remember, we all have been where you are now. And many of empathize very much w/how you feel.
Here ya go (if you are looking to buy one):
It's an all-in-one care plan book. It will probably do well for all the areas y ou have to work.

I hand delivered my resume to the hospital that I'm hoping to work for and I got past the secretary when she introduced me to the human resources manager. I spoke with her and she asked me what I'm looking for. She said she thought that the surgery position I applied for might be a good fit for a new grad and she said she would speak with the director of surgical services to see when she would like to start interviewing. I guess they must be one of those places that advertises positions to create a pool of applicants. The secretary said there hasn't even been a timeline set for accepting applications or interviewing. These positions have been listed on their website for months. Anyway, I feel better because I did what I could and now I can do no more. I'm not begging for a job. I did decide that while I was spiffy looking I would hand deliver one other resume to a home care agency. The secretary was really professional and friendly and told me about the services that the agency provides. I asked how they felt about new grads doing home care since you are so independent and she said they have no problem with it. They have a nurse who has been with them for two years who came straight out of school with no experience and loves her job. She said they provide orientation until you are comfortable going it alone. So, that was a positive prospect. Thanks for the support. I'll let you know when I hear something.
i am helping a few friends in doing a research on the performance of male students in actual deliveries. they want to know the factors that hinder and enhance the performance of male students in the L&D room.. OB is not strictly for females, but males can't help feeling awkward in such conditions.
If there are journals that we can use, pls let me know so we can help the undergrads. Thanks in advance!
hi everyone. i am 23 and a mother of 2 young children. i have recently had a change of heart and really want to become a nurse in l&d. because of financial issues i am only considering becoming a lpn, i know a rn would be great, but our hospital is small only 10 birthing "suites" and i know of atleast 2 lpns working there. there is only one thing holding me back, as i get extremely excited about working in l&d i get nervous and scared of having to do other tasks outside of l&d. just looking for some advice and encouragement. thanks to all that can help.

Most L&D's do NOT use LPN's. If you have your heart set on L&D, then go all the way and get your RN when you can. Best of luck!
I am a 17 year L& D nurse and am going to be interviewing for a nurse clincian job for a OB/GYN clinic. I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on what the Doc's may ask me or if any one has any pointers. It has been a long time since I went to an interview. Thanks
Voting to sticky this thread. :)

I managed our prenatal clinic for years before going back to the inpatient side. I went back because after a time, the clinic routine bored me to death! It was great but always the same thing over and over. I had a ton of autonomy and functioned like a NP (and am not one). Without that autonomy I had, it would have been even more routine and boring.

I will definitely let you know. Thanks for your interest. It has been so difficult to go from having the camraderie and support of fellow students for two years to nothing. I went from being confident and excited to discouraged and scared in just a couple of months. I know I am capable, I graduated at the top (within the top 5) of my class of about 100. I have had instructors and my ER preceptor tell me that I have critical thinkng skills that are advanced for where I am for experience. I have excellent references. I just need a dang interview. Thanks again for the advice. I AM going to see them in person tomorrow. I feel encouraged, thanks to you.:kiss
