For those who are starting in sept, Were you assigned summer reading? We went to orientation last week, and were handed a list with 1200.00 worth of books on it,(to be gotten before school begins) and were also assigned about 1200 pages of summer reading...... WHEW!!!!!! alot to read!

anyone else experiencing this?

No....I think if they expected me to purchase $1200 worth of books and also expected me to read over the summer I would tell them where they could stick it and find either a new school or a new career! :wink2: (that is what I would want to do, anyway)

Honestly, I couldn't pay for those books...

At our school, when we are off for the summer, we're off...nothing assigned.

Happy reading!

With 1200.oo worth of books I can see why you need to read as many pages. YIKES is all I can say. Good luck and get started yesterday.

How much are your books going to cost? I'm curious now...

Find a new school?????? LOL no way!!!

.... it took me a long time to get into nursing school......so i'd just about jump thru flaming hoops at this point...

I was shocked at the summer reading too.... but i figure its only going to get me ahead of the game...they told us they were assigning the reading so they can get us into the hospital setting asap.....

I paid maybe $1200 for books over two years. Not for one semester.

I don't think reading nursing books without having a lecture and good explanation from a live person doesn't help much with understanding what's going on. If anything, it can be very confusing.

cyberkat,

i am so sorry if i gave you the impression that the 1200.00 of books was for one semester.....

they are books for the entire 2 years, but according to the teaching staff.... they should all be purchased before school starts.

as to reading before lecture:

I actually think its not a bad idea to read before lectures... then its not foriegn when you hear it from an instructor..also, the instructor can kind of reinforce what you've read, Heck, when i was taking microbiology, i read the material beforehand AND taking PRE notes...lol....my some of my classmates thought i was weird.... but i got an A in the course

I've already started the summer reading....i do about an hour and a half each night in 3 different books....: #1. fundamentals of nursing.... #2.critical thinking skills and nursing, and #3.calculating with confidence (math for nurses)

Of course the "language" is a bit foreign, but i am catching on, bit by bit...

Wow! You already had orientation AND they want you to buy all those books for classes that don't even start until September?! There is no way I would be able to afford all of that. I have to imagine that are a lot of people who wouldn't be able to.

Our orientation isn't until the week before classes begin. The only thing we have to do this summer is start working on some basic drug math for a test they give us the first week.

BTW, are you in a BSN or ADN program?

Todd

Todd,

the orientation we went to was one of two orientations. It was to give us a list of things we need by late august/sept, to let us know about what health stuff we need to hand in (innoculations etc), to tell us we need to be cpr cerified by august.....and for us to register for first semester classes. Our second orientation is in August..

its an ADN program...

Ah...I see. My school just mailed us all of that information. I kind of wish they would give us an earlier opportunity to meet and maybe just get to know some of the other students. I don't know anyone who was admitted for the fall. For all I know, I could be the only guy!

Good luck with all that reading!

Todd

I agree , the ADN program I was in was the same :Excessive reading. FOllow the syllabus given to you, the outline. Find those areas in your reading material, may indicated a bit of speed reading but that is what I found out worked the best for me and the others! we hada study group and it was the best thing since sliced bread.

It tells you where the test questions will come from and it does not leave out anything in learning. Good luck.

Bevi..I was joking about the find a new school bit....that is why I have a wink following it......i know that that is unrealistic.

Also did not realize 1200 is for the entire two year program.

My books run between 200 and 500 per semester, for about 13-15 credit hours. Sometimes a little lower or a little higher. BUT, I can sell them back at the end of each semester for half of what i paid for them, and then use that money toward the next round of books! I would NOT be able to afford to buy two years worth of texts at once.
