New to Monitoring, help!

Published

So I am new to monitoring. After researching, I see that it's recommended to avoid a plethora of foods and products. What I really want to know is what is the actual likelihood that the use of these would curate a false positive? It is kind of insane to me to think that we as nurses can't use hand sanitizer because hand hygiene is so important. Wouldn't washing after every instance just make your hands raw, especially for years? What is your personal experience? Do you really avoid things like soy sauce? What about alcohol free mouthwash? Do you use perfume? If you don't use sanitizer, what do you use? Basically: has anything other than actually drinking, or a UTI, made you false positive? The list of products to avoid seems almost impossible. What can we use? Please respond!

No poppy seeds, sourdough bread ,mo donuts no honey buns no sautéed anything.. I eat chips and cookies for the most part.  Not healthy

I really hate this! Wouldn't the alcohol evaporate out of the sourdough bread, or anything baked with the vanilla due to the high temperature? And honestly, with that in mind, wouldn't it cook out of most things? Like soy sauce, red wine vinegar, etc.?

I don't know. In another thread someone said they eat anything they want and no false positive tests. I'm a little more than a year from completion so I will keep on being extra safe just in case. In hindsight I should have tried everything I thought I couldn't have day one but now I just want to finish this

Just had 3 trader joe vanilla meringues and now I'm like 🥲😂 didn't even think about it. Hopefully nothing comes of it, I don't actually drink alcohol outside of being monitored so that would suck🥲😂

From what I read here most likely you will be fine. Drink a lot of water just in case.

Please guys, relax.  There's a post about foods on this board every week.  You can eat the majority of things and it will NOT result in a positive Urine ETG.  I eat Sesame Chicken with rice drenched in soy sauce.  I eat white sourdough bread multiple times a week.  I use red vinegar dressing on my salads.  I eat tons of cookies and cakes since I have a sweet tooth (who knows how much vanilla extract they use on them).  I go to Italian restaurants and have at it!

I get a Urine ETG 4 times a month!  None have been positive, and many times, I have gotten tested the morning after eating these things.  I've drank non-alcohol beers (0.5%) and it's been fine.  I use mouthwash that is 40% alcohol (Listerine).

Food will not give you a positive test.  They tell you not to eat them because you cannot use foods as an excuse.  EVERYONE WHO GETS A POSITIVE TEST USES FOOD AND OTHER THINGS AS AN EXCUSE.  (when we know in reality, they drank actual alcoholic drinks).

Worry more about what things you will do to make this period of monitoring as normal as possible for you.

It's sad that we have to live like this.. I been in monitoring for two years and still forget and eat things LOL Sunday I ate a piece of cake and realized it was made with rum extract and vanilla extract which say so has 40% alcohol. Then I'm called on to test Monday. I was a little worried after knowing it was rum extract.. I eat everything else and never had an issue. With only 11 days left in my contract I was worried cause I'm not starting over for anything! The test is negative.. eat and be merry !

Thank you so much! This gives me more peace of mind. It has been so overwhelming trying to adjust to this.

This might be a stupid question, but I thought it would be worth asking just in case. Have you guys had any issues with painting your nails (using nail polish remover or acetone)? Will that affect anything?

I went through a monitoring program years ago, The list  foods to avoid was daunting. At one considered living on Salteen crackers and bottled water. But I just became very careful about what I ate and what cosmetics I used. For hand hygiene I did wash my hands alot. At the beginning of each snift I applied a good moisture barried cream I didn't used hand sanitizer for several years but reccomend Hygiene Clean. They have a great list if affordable hand hygiene products.

My general list of foods yo not eat were

Protein bars

Ripe or fermented fruits

Cinnamon rolls

Honeybuns

Macadamia nuts

Bread (white or sourdough)

Hot sauce

Dishes made with alcoholic beverages

Sugar-free gums

Energy drinks

Fermented soda

"non-alcoholic" beer or wine
