Hey guys, i've been on this forum for a month now maybe...and i am yet to come across anyone from my school which is pretty bad...i think.....is there anyone at all that attends, is planning to or attended the UNM college of nursing.....i'm suprised that for a site this big no one has heard of it from school....it would be great if anyone is on here..please.....:loveya:

Random thought: I'm going to post flyers in school, if dont hear back from people before christmas!!!

Hey!

I am thinking about applying to UNM, depending on how things with other schools work out. I recently moved to ABQ from Wisconsin, and have been taking science pre-reqs (already have my Bachelor's in Psychology). Are you thinking of applying to the program? What have you heard about it? I was surprised at how many pre-reqs they require (like pharmacology, patho 1 and 2). Theoretically I could be ready to start nursing school Summer of Fall 2010, depending on the school's requirements, but for UNM I would not be ready until Spring 2011, and I'm not sure I want to wait that long. I am keeping my options open and will probably apply to different schools across the U.S., although I would prefer to stay here as I know people. It gets so confusing! What are your plans? If you search these forums there are quite a few other topics on UNM.

Cool...Thanks a lot.... Yeah i noticed the load of pre-reqs...but i think it is good....i looked up the schedule and i guess clinicals start in the first semester, so it reduces the course load a lot.....i am thinking of applying for spring 2010.....i am taking A&P1, patho, stats and spanish in the spring then in the fall....the remaining 12 credits.....

I think my dad went there for a year or so back before WW II.

Rimzy! You're not alone, but there aren't many of us on here, either! I'm a NM resident, just graduate in May from a college in TN, currently attending UNM for the remainder of my pre-reqs. I applied for the FEB 15 deadline for 2nd degree BSN at UNM CON. Have you applied/ been accepted at UNM yet? Love to hear from you!

I did some of my pre-reqs at UNM, but I was daunted by the competitive entry to the BSN program. I'm planning on going back for the RN-BSN bridge if I'm still in this town a couple years from now.

Sweet! I am only two classes away from being done with my prereq's...taking Patho II and Human Growth & Development (req'd for another few nursing schools) this semester. It's back to the grind at 8:00 on Thursday! :specs:

Hi All:

I am currently a student in the BSN program at UNM...in fact, I will be starting my last semester in the program tomorrow! Let me know if you have any questions or need any information. Best of luck.

:clpty: woot! Christmas came early this year! I'm sure we'd both love to hear everything you've got! Advice on the admissions process, pros and cons of the program, what you wish you had known or done before starting... I am a second-degree student. My app is in already, so once I get them my transcripts, my app should be complete. I had a chat with one of my profs last semester about the application process, and she mentioned that since they raised the minimum GPA requirement from 2.5 to 3.0 (science and cumulative), they have far fewer applicants, and it's been a bit easier to get in if you meet these requirements. I think she guesstimated about 48 out of 70 applicants were admitted for Spring 2010? I'm hoping this is the case...previously I heard that UNM had approximately 200+ applicants each cycle for maybe 35-40 spots. I was considering making an appointment with the advisement office to see what they can tell me about the current stats for applicants and whatnot. Right now, I've got a 3.1 science GPA, 3.22 cumulative from my alma mater, 3.66 for UNM....I've GPA's coming out my ears! :lol2: I'm curious to know if UNM pays more attention to your science GPA for their specified prereq's (I've got 3.61 average from micro, A&P I & II, Patho I, and Pharm).

Sorry to dump all of this on you! I'm excited to hear what you have to share with us.

The admission process has changed significantly since I last applied, even though it was only a little over a year ago. It is my understanding that they have moved to weighing GPA very heavily, though I am not certain whether or not there is a heavier emphasis on science GPA vs. cumulative GPA. I was accepted as second degree student (I already had a bachelor's and master's degree) on my first try. My undergraduate GPA and science GPA weren't all that great, but my graduate GPA was really good - not sure whether not this helped at all as my master's degree is non-nursing related. Additionally, they significantly changed the pre-requisites required of second degree students. When I applied they only required A&P I, A&P II, and one additional three hour science course. They are now looking for significantly more pre-requisite coursework. I am not sure how many applicants have applied during the current admission cycle, though I do not that there has been talk in the College of Nursing that the class size may become smaller due to budget issues (40 students, 32 traditional and 8 second degree students were accepted into my class). Sorry I can't give you much insight into the current admissions process. I can tell you that Ann Marie and others in the advising office are A LOT of help. I was in contact with them throughout the application process. Definitely follow through with making an appointment, this will give you a lot of insight and give you a feel for the College of Nursing as a whole. I think that this is extremely important - check out the college, the faculty, the students, all of that ahead of time. Make sure that it will be a good fit for you...you will be spending the next 16 months of your life there!

In regard to the program....there is some good and some not so good aspects of the program. If you want more information about this, feel free to send me a PM. I can also tell you that they have signficantly restructured the cirriculum beginning with the class behind me. Those admitted the semester after me, started the new cirriculum, which is really quite a bit different. For instance they changed the professional development portion of the cirriculum, there are now 3 professional development classes instead of 2 (they added a third one during level 4). They have also chaged the way that students gain community nursing experience. Everyone has said that this improvements were made to better the experience in the program and make the cirriculum more student friendly, though I can't really speak to this. Change in the College of Nursing is a guarantee, but the time you start the program the cirriculum may have changed two more times :)

Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions and I will do the best I can to answer them!

Wow!! this is tooo great...Thanks a lot, wow just when i thought it was just Meredith and i here.... Yes, i shall pm you asap!!
