New Med

This morning (I work straight midnights) our medical director prescribed a new antipsychotic, Abilify. Things were hectic, of course, so I didn't have time to read the insert. He had some freebies from the pharm rep; it's that new.

Has anybody heard of this stuff or had any patients taking it?

Any input will be welcome.

One of our clinicians told me about it just this week I subscribe to nursingdrugguide.com but saw nothing there. Maybe I missed it tho. I'm curious too.

As long as we're on the subject, anyone know how long it takes for the new antipsychotic, Geodon, to kick in? Days? Weeks?

Dosage for Geodon

The lowest effective dose of any medication should always be used to reduce the risk of troublesome and potentially harmful side effects. The recommended initial dose of Geodon is 20 mg per day, but this dose may be increased to 80 mg twice a day, depending on its effectiveness in each individual. Increasing the dose beyond 80 mg twice a day is not recommended. Your physician should watch for improvement of your symptoms for several weeks before adjusting the dose because it may take that long for the drug to produce its full effect.

We just started using the Geodon IM injections - anyone seen a difference with that?

First, thanks to sunny for pointing me to yahoo! to check out Abilify.:kiss

Our shrinks have jumped on the I.M. Geodon bandwagon. They maintain there's less risk of EPS than there is with the old standby, Haldol. Some of us are dubious, however:confused:

They predictably go for the newest med that the pharm reps talk up: Risperdal, then Zyprexa, then Zydis, then P.O. Geodon. The jury is still out among us R.N.s, however.:nurse: :rolleyes: ;)

We had our first client on Abilify this week. (outpt...) Only 18 and her family wants to be rid of her! I hope theres some positive outcomes.
