I have my Masters, my BSN and am a certified Case Mgr. I currently work in a hospital and deal with SNFs everyday. I have worked on Medicaid reimbursements in the past, but not Medicare. I have tried desperately to get an MDS position but everyone wants experience. Does anyone have an idea what MDS Coordinators make in MA and NH? I live where I can work in either state, but always cheat myself when it comes to asking for a certain amount of pay. I've been told MDS Coordinators make good money nowadays, but with my Masters, what should I expect? Thanks!

Specializes in Care Coordination, MDS, med-surg, Peds.

I think I will look, maybe in a larger city. I am also planning on moving to a warmer state sometime in the next year or two... I know that I am stressed bad enough with MDS, but to add the on call is a bit much!

I hear you....Another option might be Interim MDS Work....there are Companies that specialize in this.

Good Luck!

Specializes in LTC/ Rehab, Home Health...

I have over 20 yrs. nursing exp. in LTC/SNF as an LPN then RN. I also have about 6 months MDS 3.0 training. How can I find an MDS position with so little exp.? Is anyone willing to train you? Most everyone wants experience. I would think that my LTC experience would help some. I would even get certified at my own expense.

Even with only six months 3.0 training, I would think you would be able to find an MDS Position.....

Companies can't find enough MDS Coordinators; they are begging for them!

Some Companies pay for AANAC Certification.

Go ahead...Send your Resume out!

Good Luck!! :)

Hi,

I am an LPN in Northwest Indiana area with almost 12 years of experience and have recently interviewed for an MDS coordinator. How much pay can I expect?

I need to say though that I have no MDS experience.

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

Probably around $20-23/hr. Some companies will insist on call and others won't.

If I was hiring a new MDS coordinator and an MSN walked asking for the job I would be very hesitant about hiring him/her. why would an MSN want to work in a position that only requires an LVN/LPN? Especially considering the pay would be LVN/LPN level. Isn't that like an RN looking for work as a CNA or house keeping? They are both important jobs in a facility... but why?

Congrats on the masters but that does not matter when it come to MDS. You really just have to lucky with landing the job. Every facility wants the MDS nurse to have experience. It take a lot to train a nurse MDS and their responsibilities. You have to look at it this way the MDS office is the foundation for all nursing homes. If your MDS office does not perform then it will directly affect State Survey and Myers and Staffers. If you are not ANNAC Certified then even though it is costly it will help when you apply for this position. I believe that every MDS nurse starting out with or without experience should receive at least 23hr. I hope this helps!

I couldn't imagine working MDS in a SNF without any SNF nursing experience. It is different than hospitals in so many ways. I started MDS with SNF experience and it allowed me to focus on the specifics of MDS without having to be trained on how SNFs work. It really is a different world than hospitals. I am sure many people get hired as MDS coordinators without SNF experience but I personaly have never met anyone that has.

Does anybody want to come to northern Idaho or know of anybody - MDS/CM Nurse?
