New MD-RN from the Philippines

Published

Hello everyone! I'm a new graduate of BS Nursing from the Philippines. I will be taking the Philippine December board exams. :)

I'm still deciding which state to take my NCLEX - my choices are:

1) New York

2) New Jersey

3) California

4) Texas

I am 28 years old, single with no children. Where do you think would be the best place for me to work?

well it depends antigone...

1. if you have relatives in one of the 4 states you mentioned, you can work there. They can help you adjust and of course they can support you when you need help.

2. But if you don't get along with your relatives.. haha :p thats another story.

3. You can look at each of the state's requirements.

New York - needs CVS before you can work there. You can get that from CGFNS

New Jersey - needs CES (Credential evaluation service), also from CGFNS

California - they do their own credential evaluation. It will take around 3 to 6 months before you get your eligibility. Your school will just send your TOR AND RLE.

Texas - I am not sure about this, I think they only need CES now.

4. Weather can be a factor too hihi. I heard its cold in New Jersey and of course hot in Texas hehe.

Goodluck this December. :p

I wouldn't recommend taking the boards anymore unless you have plans to work as a RN in the Philippines. Most MD-RNs I know do not work as RN. If you have your transcripts now you can apply for eligibility and visascreening NOW and will actually be slightly faster since it's minus the PRC having to send the license verification and of course do not need to wait till Dec and another month or so for the results.

California is nice, the weather is good. No snow during winter except in some high places like Lake Tahoe, etc. On summer it is hot very similar to our summer in the Philippines. Lots of Filipinos here and other Asians which make you feel at home. The salary is high but the cost of living is expensive but you will survive financially and have enough for yourself.

Good luck!

hi antigone, we're actually on the same boat. I 'm also an MD-RN (I'll be graduating March 2007) and am now deciding which state to choose. I think it's best to stay in a place where you know someone so that it'll be a lot easier for you to adjust and you wouldn't get so lonely. With that in mind, I've narrowed down my options to just 2 states: Calif and NY.

I hope you don't mind me asking, why do you plan on taking the local boards? I also plan on taking the NLE on June 2007 but after doing some readings here ... I'm now having 2nd thoughts about it. Most of my classmates still plan on taking the NLE though so I just want to know your reason. Thanks a lot and goodluck :balloons:

Should you decide to move to another State later on, licenses are endorsable---although each State has a different requirement and a fee is always associated with licensure endorsements.

I think it is important to choose a State that has a job for you. It will be hard for someone moving to a new place and not being able to support him/herself financially. After having enough resources, you can always move to a new place or State if you want to later on. It’s good to have a support system---however, living with relatives for a long time for free if you cannot find a job in that place might be too embarrassing and very inconsiderate because they also have bills to pay. This is just a thought to ponder on and is not directed to anyone in particular. They are just my thoughts.....

After your thourough research from this forum, internet, magazines, friends, relatives, which place is the best to live in and work, choose a place then where your heart is...

First, you will be applying to Licensure by Examination, you never apply to take the NCLEX. You need to get approval from a state to be able to sit for the exam, just to cleat things up for some people that are not familiar with how things work in the US.

You select a state because you want to work there, then proceed from that point..............you need to do some research and see what looks the best to you. Even just because a friend likes a certian place, it does not mean that you will.

Thanks for all your input. :) I really want to work in New York but I don't know anyone from there. But it's a dream. And people say it takes long :(

Is it true that California NCLEX isn't qualified for reciprocity to other states? I have a cousin in California but I'd really prefer to work in NY if given a chance.

The NCLEX exam passing result is honored by all states. There is no such thing as reciprocity between states, only the NCLEX exam has reciprocity. And the exam is national, there is no state NCLEX exam. N stands for National.

If you wish to work in NY, you will need to have a CVS done by CGFNS, this is needed for intial licensure or endorsement. It is a special credentials verification that is required only for NY and is not valid for other states, nor is the CES that other states want valid in NY.

thanks for the info. :) so if, say I apply in Vermont (I heard it's faster) and take the NCLEX, and then request for endorsement to NY, it's possible?

is NY processing really slower than the rest of the states? how long would it take approximately if I start the process (exams, etc) January of 2007? thanks. :)

NY has the CGFNS CVS for NY req't and foreign RNs need to go through it no matter what. So, what I'm trying to say is if going for NY you have to apply directly to them (via CVS) no matter what and you would have to wait for their processing. It doesn't matter of you're licensed already in one state or passed the NCLEX via another State then endorsing. They will still let you do the CVS no matter what.

As for VT, it takes around +/- 4 months now. NM is another state that is relatively fast, posters here keeps posting that it takes on 2-3 months.

Whatever state you choose just make sure you weighed all the pros and cons for going there. For some Filipinos, having relatives and friends in one place is a factor as well as the weather.
