I am starting a LPN school in a few months, and was wondering what is the one item, or book should I purchase. I have been working as a CNA for a few months just to get a taste of the nursing life, and I love it. I have tried to be "nosy" so to speak with some of our nurses, but since I am a man they think I won't make it. (A co-worker told me that one) I scored all 100%'s in my CNA classes and now I am even more motivated to show the doubters that men are an asset in the world of nursing. Yes I am the only guy in my class this fall so I am feeling a little nervous about that so any advice would be oh so helpful.

Welcome to the club, bbb :) I'm one of 3 guys in our class of 26 - don't listen to the naysayers, and go for it. Being male is totally irrelevent - you're a human providing care for other humans, plain and simple. Can't recommend any particular book, as all of our books were specified/required by the school. My advice, once you're in classes, is to try not to miss even a day, and stay current with your studying/worksheets/reading/etc. And don't be afraid to ask questions. And try not to stress out - I see a lot of folks in my class freaking out every test day, usually for no good reason, as most are doing well. I start clinicals in a month and can't wait !!!! - I'm more of a hands on person than a sit on my butt person, so the change will do me good
Wish you much success on your nursing journey !!!

hey welcome aboard! I think the male nurses are GREAT...we had two in our class that finshed with the BEST grades! so go kick some butt and show those girls you can do it!
as far as the one book question...i used the med-surg made incredibly easy and pharmacology made incredibly easy...those were the two subjects that had SOOO much info that i needed it broke down for me a little better.
welcome to nursing!

Im also 1 of 3 males in a class of 18, (although we lost one male). Being a minority i think gets you extra attention, lol. Just study hard, stay focused and you'l do great, thats what someone told me and now im at the top of my class! I too had alot of neg people telling me that Nursing is hard and that i should not waste my time on it. I even had someone tell me to go ahead and they will see how far i'd get!- I just gave that person an invitation to my graduation....LOL.
But congrats on getting accepted:yeah: looks like you're headed in the right direction.

I'm about to graduate (hopefully) in August from LPN school. The one thing you could buy, book wise, would be a drug book. Get a list of "up to date meds" that are being used and concentrate on them. Know both names, the generic (which is acutally the real drug name) and the trade or brand name, most common side effects only (b/c there will be many), pt teaching about the drug and of course interactions.......and don't forget about those herbs also. Good luck. I was a CNA for 5 months before joining nursing. What I did, didn't bother me. But having to treat those people (I worked in a nursing home) like they were on a rolling belt in a factory is what I hated:angryfire. I would have 12-14 residents for just 1 of me. How could I treat those patients the way they deserved. I have taken a vow (and hopefully I can stick to it) that I will NEVER work again in a nursing home and NEVER put my parents in one either!!!!! The nurses are not nurses in nursing homes. They're just med pass-ers.
I feel the same way about nursing homes. I am a little more lucky than you were at mine we have only 8-10 pt's and all of our nurse's help alot. Most of my resident's know I am attending LPN school and some of them(including the battle axe's) are hoping I sign on to continue their care. I am even more excited now.....and I will buy a drug book, and certain one?

We have three male students in our class. We just finished our core and start nursing classes on the 18th of August. I have NO doubt that all three of them can and will make it through the class and each of them will be fantastic nurses.

Gender has absolutely nothing to do with your success as a nursing student or nurse! There's only one guy in my class, and he doesn't bring up the gender issue. I personally appreciate that he doesn't make a big deal of it. Women are working in male-dominated fields and vice versa pretty commonly now, not a big deal. Good luck to you.
As the date approach's I find myself getting even more excited. As an Aide my patient's (Lady's) are letting me do more and more for them some asking for me. The Nurse's are also letting me "tag-a-long" and observe almost at will. I really hope after I graduate I can continue working for this center I love it. Being a newer Aide as well has been challenging, but now I feel I have found my calling. Maybe some of it is my "newness" to the field because I also work with some of the what I call carrer burnout's that hate their job, but I must say I like being an Aide, and will love being an LPN.
