  1. I know how you feel. I just started in nursing too, and I recieved 3 days of shotty orientation (by the nurse leaving after I was trained!!) then put off on my own. I am only PRN, but worked 7 straight days. I was scared and almost didn't go. You will get it down. The 1st few days I didn't get all treaments done and my unit manager helped me. After the 4th day I got through it all. Last day new admit, a fall, and still got out only 30 minutes late. It gets easier, but never comfortable. I assume that is a good thing! Chin up. One thing I tried was doing the slower people 1st just in case a problem popped up. Lean on your Aide's for the tasks they can help with, and return the favor to them when you can. Great Aide's can make your day easier when mutual respect is shared!

I am a recent grad working at a ltc facility PRN. I love it. I have had a shift by myself, and got feedback that I perfomed well above expectations etc. I have picked up another 3 shifts (T-giving included for brownie points) over the next week. This facility has many prn nurses, and a few are working many hours. My ? without getting carried away is, how should one go about asking or getting a f/t spot. I don't want to come off too needy though I am. Any pat experience in this mater would be appreciated.
  3. As the date approach's I find myself getting even more excited. As an Aide my patient's (Lady's) are letting me do more and more for them some asking for me. The Nurse's are also letting me "tag-a-long" and observe almost at will. I really hope after I graduate I can continue working for this center I love it. Being a newer Aide as well has been challenging, but now I feel I have found my calling. Maybe some of it is my "newness" to the field because I also work with some of the what I call carrer burnout's that hate their job, but I must say I like being an Aide, and will love being an LPN.
  4. I feel the same way about nursing homes. I am a little more lucky than you were at mine we have only 8-10 pt's and all of our nurse's help alot. Most of my resident's know I am attending LPN school and some of them(including the battle axe's) are hoping I sign on to continue their care. I am even more excited now.....and I will buy a drug book, and certain one?
  5. I am starting a LPN school in a few months, and was wondering what is the one item, or book should I purchase. I have been working as a CNA for a few months just to get a taste of the nursing life, and I love it. I have tried to be "nosy" so to speak with some of our nurses, but since I am a man they think I won't make it. (A co-worker told me that one) I scored all 100%'s in my CNA classes and now I am even more motivated to show the doubters that men are an asset in the world of nursing. Yes I am the only guy in my class this fall so I am feeling a little nervous about that so any advice would be oh so helpful.
  6. :confused:I as well applied for a hospital aid at our local state ran prison hospital and had similar questions. This hospital is seperate from the prison. Has anyone worked in this particular environment. I was just wondering what kind of patients you serve?
  7. Maybe I had a great teacher, but who know's. I thought the test's etc he gave us during class was 10 x's harder than the written exam for my state. That being said I scored 92% and didn't study. If you follow and listen well in class you should be fine. As far as the skill portion I feel I got lucky. 1 hand washing (Duh) Peri-care,hair care,Rom one shoulder, and transfer from bed to wc using gait belt. peri-care was kinda nerve racking but I had a good examiner.
  8. :up:I am a 33 y/o male and was just added to my state registry yesterday. My wife also took the state test etc and passed! We wanted a more stable career course, and was just burned out in our previous career's. Plus if we ever want to re-locate we figured getting employment would be much easier. I say go for it I did and I don't regret it.
